We were lucky to catch up with Jay Reese recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
As an artist who writes music and performances frequently, I’ve began the journey of orchestrating my own events to push my music and perform, as well as giving other artists an opportunity to perform. With little to no money in my pocket, I’ve been blessed with being able to throw a few shows without paying anything and the results have been phenomenal. The support that has come with it has given me the confidence snd courage to pursue more opportunities for myself and any other talent I may come across

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began my journey writing music when I was barely 17. I wrote funny parodies at first just for fun which then fueled my passion to create my own music on a serious note. After some time and breaks, at only 24, I chose to follow my heart and started putting my music out there and doing everything I can to make something happen. Things began to pick up for me starting out by winning a music competition, getting my music played across the country, landing playlist placements, getting signed to SpaceBound Entertainment which is an independent record label and so much more. The rush you get being on stage and performing something you’ve created can’t compare to anything, it’s a priceless feeling that I will continue to pursue. I think that a lot of people don’t talk about the hard parts and just push their accomplishments, in my case I do my best at being as authentic as possible by showing what I’ve accomplished but also give in insight on what it took to get there. This journey to follow your heart, your passion, it’s a challenging one, and if you don’t fail quick, don’t take risks and invest In yourself, you’ll never see the change you seek. I’ve learned to trust the process and keep going regardless of what’s happening or what’s to come.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
There was a time when I was low on income and had nothing really going on for me with my music until I seen a post on Instagram about the possibility of being able to perform in Atlanta Georgia with a paid flight and hotel for one artist. When I did my research on this platform I realized how important it was for me to take that chance before it was too late, the only problem was, I didn’t have money and in this case I had to have funds to become a member of the platform in order for me to submit my music. I tried everything I thought I needed to do for money like loans, friends, family, still not enough for what I needed until I was told I could take out some income from my 401k that my company I worked for at the time set up for me. Now understanding the importance of that I didn’t know if it was the right move but I couldn’t wait otherwise I’d lose my chance. So I took out what I needed, invested in the platform and thanks to god and divine timing, I won that chance my heart deeply desired. That was first of many opportunities I’ve been blessed with. This one moment taught me to follow your passion no matter what without hesitation. To not worry about the outcome and to just flow with the motion. Everything works out in the end.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Before beign signed and surrounded by the right people, it took alot of trials and errors to get there. The music industry alone has a lot of ups and downs, rights and wrongs, good and bad people and you must know the difference. If it sounds too good to be true it always is. I met an individual who said he could make me famous and we could
Make alot of money because I had talent and the look for it. The only thing was, at that time I was desperate for change because the high I had after the opportunities I’ve been given were gone and I had nothing all over again. I didn’t realize I was being lied to and scammed, I was told my music was great but I needed to be coached and mentored, at first it seemed like I just needed help but this is where things went wrong. Every time I had to call this individual I had to pay money for every mistake I had whether that would be my kids crying in the background, or a movie I was told I had to watch and if I got any questions he had wrong, more money was taken from me. I let this happen alot longer than I should have and thankfully, I was able to pull myself out of it. I was told alot of negative things when I walked away and it made me feel hopeless and like I didn’t belong but that wasn’t true. Everyone has a story, everyone is unique in their own way and everyone deserves a chance and nobody can take that away. I realized this soon after and began to pursue my career again finally coming across a team who believes in me.
