We recently connected with Jay Naff and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I do wish I would have started sooner. I’ve really found my place as a birth photographer. I think if I would have started sooner it would be nice to go even deeper into birth training. Now being a mommy of three with a career I’m not in a spot I can take on as much.
Jay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi I’m Jay!
I’ll start with some fun facts! I’m from a small town. The name Jay came from my sister always calling me baby jay. One of my favorite things is skipping. If I’m not dancing , I’m skipping. Living life with my partner and three beautiful and wild boys. I was taking pictures way before they were born. My boys were definitely my inspiration for starting Jay Naff Photography. Like so many other women I experienced postpartum depression. It’s was worst after my first and it almost won. After I knew I had to work harder than ever to not fall back into that place with more births to come.
From the moment I had my son though I went head over heels for birth workers. I’ve been a prenatal yoga teacher for years where I first started in the baby world. I just recently launched into birth photography as my specialty. After I did my first one last year I knew it was my place. Currently becoming a doula. Being a witness of women in their power of labor. Documenting their wild and fearless love unfold.
Thankful for my families supporting me on this journey. I’m so excited to meet your new love on their BIRTH day.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’m a huge on goals! I have a few for my business.
I hope to help other women through postpartum depression. Birth photography usually doesn’t feel like a need. Those first few week moving through baby blues photos can make a difference. Looking back and remembering that moment that already feels like it was long ago and all the brain fog. Giving them a memory they can relive forever. Especially on the hard days.
Currently working up to submit my portfolio to be a registered birth photographer and learning the world of film!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My old/current clients! I will say I feel I have the best clients ever. Almost everyone that’s hired me last year told me a past client referred me. I’m so thankful for you all!
