We were lucky to catch up with Jay King recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I honestly always enjoyed writing, it was a passion that started when I was younger but around 2010 was when I started to take it to the next level. I was a single stay home mom with three kids and in that same year I happened to purchase a desktop computer for our home. Every time I found a little free time while the kids were taking their naps or while the kids were playing. I started to take that time to rewrite some stories from my middle school days and one of my stories just happened to be the start of my novel. Without even noticing I was slowly but surely turning my three page essay into a novel but I didn’t take it extremely serious until a couple of years in and once I got grounded and knew what I wanted to create. I made a plan and I tried my best to stick with it. And let me tell you, the process was beyond stressful and many times I stopped and put it off to the side because of the headaches that came along, with a lack of support system but I buckle down and made it my goal to publish my first novel.
Jay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jay King and the best way to describe myself is that I am the Jack of all trades. I have multiple businesses and I’m working on creating new brands every single day. I’ve been in the beauty industry for quite a while. I am known for my makeup line Mr Jay’s Cosmetics and also for my online boutique, Jay’s Boutique and recently I’ve just entered into the writer’s world, releasing my new Urban novel, “The Gurl Behind the Makeup.. ” which has been a great read and a big hit with my audience and I’m just looking to expand my horizon and to give everyone a copy of my newly drop book to add to their book club collection..
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Honestly I think what helped me build my reputation within the business market were friends because all of my homegirls had their own businesses going and we all utilized each other for whatever services we all brought to the table. Which was just major, for any business because support goes a long way. Especially when you have a group of friends chasing the same thing you’re chasing. It’s a blessing when all of you guys can literally come together and work together and promote each others work which gives you a great reputation for the future.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Finishing The Gurl Behind the Makeup and seeing it come to life was resilience of itself.
