We were lucky to catch up with Jay Farrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
For the better part of two decades, I have explored many abandoned houses in the backwoods, factories in former industrial areas, and many more forgotten varieties of structure. My primary intrigue is the blight, texture, and the sheer desolation that only someplace abandoned could offer. In the past, I have brought models to abandoned buildings to do photoshoots, as it was a perfect mood and contrast to their pure beauty. Over the past several years, I have put most all of my effort into photographing the buildings, particularly as urban gentrification has taken over, and travel has been required to find my ideal places. It’s human nature to appreciate what has become more endangered, especially when it’s meaningful to us.
Since becoming a published author with Fonthill Media as part of the abandoned series, starting in 2018, I have taken a significantly deeper interest in the history of the buildings and surrounding areas. My goal has always been, and always will be taking the viewer on these adventures with me. Though research and community outreach has made these experience three dimensional for both myself and my audience. My author website is jayfarrellauthor.com.
Upon having the dream for several years of making farrellgallery.com my e-commerce online art gallery shop, it came to fruition and I am now selling printed goods / wall art of my favorite works on the website. There are four separate galleries on the website. The backroads gallery includes forgotten old farmhouses, nostalgic finds, and roadside antique cars / trucks from my rural explorations. The industrial gallery is for those who like abandoned factories and urban decay with rich color and texture. The travel gallery is from my various adventures, near and far; including street photography and scenic views, including beach / ocean sunrise photos. Finally, the artistic gallery is made up of figure study work with female models and conceptual work. often coupled with abandoned buildings as a cohesive unit
My signature wall art offerings are metal prints, and premium canvases that are 1.5” deep; both with rich contrast, color, and amazing black and white tones. Luster prints are also available for those who enjoy the framing and matting process. The metal and canvas options have become most popular because they’re unique, and ready to hang. Assorted sizes are available for all works. I love sharing stories behind each piece with enthusiasts and buyers. I am excited to announce more displays of my printed workaround Nashville, and an upcoming exhibit on Saturday, October 1, 10 AM-4 PM at Carthage Junction Depot, in Carthage, Tennessee. I’d love for you to come. Here’s to new developments.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to support local business and local artists. There are many talented artists / photographers out there, and certainly here in Nashville. Without the support of the public, we cannot be. This work takes time and resources to produce, and talent. Of course my gallery serves the world wide web, and my clients have choices. However, this is one of the few galleries to have this many options for my unique subject material. Not many things are as satisfying as seeing my work in a client’s home or office.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My website used to be for offering personal photoshoots for women, and I was successful with this faction of my business for several years. As time went on, I became more and more unhappy with the quality of inquiries I was receiving. It took some thought and reflection to make the change to dive into the uncertain and become an online gallery shop. Which by the way, is a different technique from marketing my services as a photographer.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Not sure I want to understand that. lol.
