We recently connected with Jay Creech and have shared our conversation below.
Jay, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Whenever someone wanted to freestyle at the lunch table, I was the kid that would beat on the table with two pens. I was curious how songs were made but didn’t have proper resources. I was introduced to FL Studio 7 by two different sets of friends within the same week. A childhood friend would let me come by and stay for hours just messing with sounds and figuring out how the software works. It took me 2 years to understand music theory enough to compose an entire song. The fact I have a natural love for computers and how they work and learning to use the software became more manageable by the day. The main obstacle I had starting out was not having consistent access to a computer during that time. The second I could afford to get my own Junior year, I haven’t looked back. One thing I feel that would’ve propelled me further could’ve been having consistent access and time to study how everything works.
Jay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ll tell anyone who wants to produce music, write songs or even perform, You must have a natural passion for it. I’ve come across tons of people who only want money and fame. You have to develop a routine for being creative, whether that is having the proper setting, drinks, recreational items, etc. What might work for me, might not work for you. I can’t tell anyone how their music should sound and most importantly there isn’t a right or wrong way. The hidden key to success is confidence. You must establish yourself as a brand and back it with the strongest confidence possible. If you don’t believe in yourself, No one will. When an artist works with me, I try my best to understand what they are looking for and more with helping the unlock parts of themselves they didn’t knew exist.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One resource I wish I embraced early was self-confidence. I never took myself seriously and would downplay myself when others would praise me. It ended up doing more damage than good. I tell anyone with doubts about being successful. Believe in yourself to the point the world believes in you just as much if not more.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing I believe that can happen would be providing broader platforms for local artist to showcase their talent. Everything I feel is thrived off a dollar sign or higher purpose while those who are pure the craft are pushed to the side.
