We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jay Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jay , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?
When I first started I was apart of a company that was not one of my own. I worked for them for about 3 years before starting my starting my own consultant business where I provide services and help build companies like the one I was working for. I made this choice because I wanted something of my own. I learned and became one of the best employees but was never really compensated for my worth. Imagine working at a job for 3 years, excelling, joining leadership with more responsibility but then never receive a pay raise. Of course I rallied for a pay raise plenty of times, but was swiftly led on every time by 4 different managers. And I mean I’ve seen 4 different management teams over the course of 3 years. So I shifted my focus to learning how the operation worked. I was eager to find my calling. I always knew that if I could ever start my company or could help build others, I would have a strong advantage. In my 3rd year of working with them, the company eventually was dismantled. During the same time, a friend of mine new someone was about to launch a project and needed some assistance. I then started my own consultant business and landed my first contract.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been in the logistics industry for almost 6 years now. I started off as a delivery driver for Amazon back in 2018. Over time I learned, grew and elevated, gaining some essential relationships. I grew up a shy person and never imagined speaking in front of people. Or even socializing with people I didn’t know. With me being sociably repulsive and having to deal with so many different personalities at work taught me a lot about myself and about people in general. This helped me gain the confidence to be able to manage, direct, and facilitate. And most importantly, interact with people. My company now manages over 200 employees, spread across 2 different contracts. I help start up and maintain logistics companies that have contracts with 3rd party delivery service providers. Some of the services I provide are recruiting, hiring, business setup/management, operational advising, budget management, project/personnel management just to name a few. I am most proud of my growth and ability to interact with others while creating successful experiences. I mainly want everyone to know that it’s ok to ask for help. I was a valet driver years ago at high end office building in Buckhead, Ga. By was of Atlanta. One of my regulars told me that if you ever want someone to do something for you, just simply say “hey can you help me.” He sad those words appeal to emotion. So for those logistics company that partner with big names like FedEx, Amazon, And DHL who are out there not meeting the needs of your partners or you may be just another to launch your business. My company is here to solve all of your problems and help you become not only successful but profitable.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Try to be as personable as possible. What I mean by that is too really put yourself in the shoes of an employee and ask yourself how would I want to be treated in this role. You wanna be as understanding as possible while stile holding your team accountable for their responsibilities. Also, positive reinforcement builds high morale. This in addition to you as an owner or manger getting in the field with your team and getting your hands dirty. This will help them realize that no one is above the common goal which is the overall success of the company.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been the best for me. My performance and work ethic speaks for itself and also serves as wonderful selling tactics for my services.
