We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jay Brooks and Neauxla C. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jay Brooks and Neauxla C. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I used to create playlists for my friends and became a walking musical jukebox! The moment I went to a live taping of “TRL” and “106 & Park” I knew I had to be a host on my own show.
We saw how music videos & content went digital and only could be found online.
[ i.e Clusters, Mad, Body Language]
Jay Brooks, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We had to create our own path, taking the independent route to create quality content for music lovers. We saw how music videos & content went online, and every music network became home to reality tv. More and more artists stopped doing interviews and access to music as a whole changed. We created the Shuffle Music show (Available via YouTube, or wherever you stream podcasts) to cover industry news, new releases, hot topics, and with our clusters, we pair every show with a playlist that fits the theme. We encourage listeners to ask questions, share music obsessions, and quite frankly talk their shit about their favorite artists. It’s a music conversation for everyday people. We’re not execs, we’re just music lovers who give a consumer perspective on the industry and art musicians provide. Our concepts are unique, the goal is to paint a picture through song [ I.e Clusers, Mad, Body Language], highlight trends [Cluster Sample this, Sample that], provocative, honest convos [Problematic Faves] and give flowers to artist who deserve [Darkchild & and our upcoming Singer/Songwriter cluster]
We explore trends to offer understanding and bridge multiple music genres, cultures, and trends. We advocate for artists and leave listeners to decide on the art for themselves.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To cultivate a music culture so rich, listeners will not only listen to what sounds good and move on to the next, but they digest and appreciate music for what it is while enjoying the feeling it brings through creating a music conversation for everyday people. A respectable space to advocate for artists who deserve a seat at the table while celebrating artists who’ve made the space.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
It’s not failure, it’s data. Mistakes made along the way isn’t time wasted but stepping stones to when your time arrives.
