We were lucky to catch up with Jay “4G” Gathers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jay “4G”, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on is a movie currently in development entitled “Bounce Back.” The genre of the film is Horror, Psychological and Supernatural Thriller. The film is meaningful to me for several reasons. For starters, the film is an extension of my book, a memoir with the same title, which will be loosely based. There were many reasons I chose the horror genre. Primarily me referencing having to overcome demons while telling horrific events I encountered throughout the course of my life. I believe everyone deals with them in one form or another (i.e. alcoholism, drug addictions, sexual molestation, rejection, abuse, etc.) and the list goes on. Therefore I wanted to personify the metaphor “demons” and make it more relatable. I believe the film will speak to a broader and global audience.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission and goal that’s driving my creative journey comes from my favorite quote: “Life is a gift…that offers us the privilege, the opportunity and the responsibility to give something back…by becoming more! -Anthony Robbins
I believe that we were all given gifts and talents. Once those same gifts and talents have been properly developed, we should utilize those skills to create generational wealth. It’s the same thing with other individuals such as Walt Disney, Bill Bowerman, Phil Knight (Nike), and even Jay Z (Roc Nation) After all, our brand is the most valuable thing we own. I want to not only leave a legacy for my children but for my grandchildren as well. To me, that is the true measure of a man.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My life itself is the epidemy of the word “resilience.” From the moment I came into this world, I had to play the cards that were dealt. I grew up knowing nothing but poverty and family dysfunction, with no support system. I was born into the lineage of two alcoholic parents, in and out of foster care, rejected by my biological father, sexually molested when I was only ten years old, had two siblings shot and the list goes on. I’ve gone through things that would have caused most men and women to lose their sanity. Despite the obstacles I faced, I made a conscious decision that I wasn’t going to be a product of my circumstances. I decided to turn my pain and trauma into purpose. Statistics say I should have been dead or in a prison cell, but I was determined not to follow that trend. I began creating purposeful music and other content. I also made sure I stayed grounded in my faith. I wrote and self-published a memoir detailing all of the countless, horrific encounters I had to overcome, and how I ultimately overcame them. My goal was to provide hope to others like myself in their darkest hour.
