Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaxyn Troy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaxyn , appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2021 I decided to transition from fashion to music. Both arts have been a love of mine since childhood, but over time I let self-doubt, shame, and fear control my ability to pursue a music career. 3 years ago I allowed myself to let some of the closest people to me hear me sing (because many had never heard me singing before) which was a huge anxious thing I thought I’d never be able to do. After that, I wrote my first set of songs and began to believe in my purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, I go by Jaxyn Troy, I’m a singer/songwriter from Ohio. I love writing, and I would describe myself as a visual communicator. I love vivid storytelling and poetry in my lyrics. In 2022, I released a remix to my first single release, Corduroy Boy. It’s a 90-inspired R&B song that narrates the dark fabric of a toxic relationship. I did my first music video for Corduroy Boy (Remix) in December 2022. Now I’m focused on growing my audience and putting out more music!
My background is in fashion art and poetry, and I love figuring out how to make all my creative loves work together in my art. I’m also a fashion stylist and I own a business (The Joelle Loleta Wardrobe Styling, LLC) and graduated from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
Oldy enough, Corduroy Boy was inspired by a fashion write-up I had to do for a job with the digital magazine, Disrupshion. Initially, I was to identify the emotional and visual connection that costume design played in the Netflix movie, The Babysitter: Killer Queen. During the movie, I kind of fixated on the main character, Cole’s corduroy suit which highlighted exactly what he was experiencing as a character. Since I was a kid, I remember noticing how the importance of color, textiles, and wardrobe played a crucial role in television and film. Watching 90s shows such as Living Single was the blueprint of this visual love.
Early on, I used fashion and music to escape the reality of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. My mission as an artist is to encourage listeners to give Freedom to themselves, Free the younger self, and give her/him/them permission to be Free and Trust themselves. Let people be who they wanna be and that starts with allowing one’s self to be who they are truly meant to be. Something I’m still learning to do myself. Being “that friend that lets you vent” through my music. I’m focused on connecting with listeners who have the urge to speak their minds, feel seen, and not be afraid to be themselves in whatever moment that life has them in.
I want to continue evolving in the ever-changing world of fashion and music. I intend to continue creating visually stunning content, and emotional connection through songs, staying attuned to emerging trends, and telling stories that resonate with a specific audience.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Fulfilling the purpose of my inner child. Showing my younger self there is no need to hide, learning how to get out of her way, and not feeling shame or fear of vulnerability. Having the courage to go after every single thing she wants and never accepts less than what she’s capable of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2021 I lost my grandmother whom I helped care for as a Home Health Aide while my parents worked full-time jobs. She was my best friend and the love of my life. Trying to figure out who I am if I’m not helping her? What is my life’s purpose now that she’s gone? Realizing her encouragement was second to none and now I have to dig deep inside of myself to find that same strength to hold on to my dreams and not give up.
