We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Javornie Brathwaite. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Javornie below.
Javornie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope that my legacy will be one that inspires people to create. To me being a creator isn’t just limited to art, the definition to create is to bring something into existence and I feel that we all have that ability whether it be creating memories and moments that’ll last forever or creating a business based on your passion or even creating a new food dish and sharing it with the world, I want people who experience my brand to be inspired to create. I’m a firm believer in what we do in our lives will have an impact that’ll last long after we are gone, I believe what your good at or what your passionate about is your main way of helping to achieve that impact, Art and Creativity just so happens to be my way of achieving that. Art and Creativity is the expression of ones soul, from what you wear to what you like can reveal the true essence of your character from your culture, to your beliefs, to your life experiences that have shaped who you are today. Whenever You create through any form of expressive medium you are sharing a part of you soul with the world, The aim for me is to inspire others to leave an impact every time they create so your mark will never be forgotten long after your gone.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Javornie Sylvester Brathwaite and I am the owner of JSB The Creator. JSB The Creator is a custom art and fashion brand that offers Custom footwear/clothing while also offering a custom service that allows individuals to explore their creativity in the form of wearable art. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I grew up in the neighborhood of Overtown, which is an inner-city neighborhood with a rich history of culture in the art of expression. I believe that as well as my older brother (who is also passionate about art and design) have influenced my love for art as a medium of expression. I came up with this brand to express my burning desire to create while also using my artistic skills and abilities to allow others to use me to bring their creative ideas to life. At first, I wanted to do this by becoming a designer for Nike because of my love for sports, sneakers, and art but after getting my associates degree in business and attending the University of Oregon I realized that working directly for another brand just wasn’t something I was passionate about doing. So, I decided to venture into building my own brand where I would have the creative freedom I wanted without being limited by the vision of the brand I’m working for. With JSB The Creator I offer clients a service where I bring their creative ideas to life whether it be on shoes, jackets, purses etc. The client presents me with how they want their item to look and it’s my job to bring that look and design to life. I also offer my own creations that I’ve come up with for others to purchase. The saying is if you look good you feel good, so I like to look at myself as a contributor to that saying. I have come a long way from where I’ve started from doing like 1 or 2 custom shoes for myself to doing hundreds of custom work for clients over the years, to working with celebrities and even collaborating with other brands, I’m proud of how far I’ve gotten with just an idea.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what has helped build my reputation has been my dedication to details and quality as well as my relationships with my clients. I pride myself on details as well as producing quality work for my clients. I also believe in building relationships with those that support you, not just the ones that purchase from you but people who’ve supported your work in any way they can. Anyone that’s willing to take the time from their schedule to support your brand shouldn’t be taken for granted, I believe building a community within your brand carries you a long way and I love the community that I have. For me to be able to help build that reputation I had to expand my social media presence. By doing YouTube and exposing more of myself it gave me the ability to connect with my supporters because they know there is a face attached to the brand and not just this invisible person behind the scenes creating art. I try to be as transparent as possible documenting my fails and success when it comes to my work. I believe that goes a long way in building your reputation because it makes you relatable to others. By focusing on details, quality, and relationships I’ve been able to grow and build a reputation of trust amongst my field of work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding part about being an artist or creative is bringing a creative Idea I had in my head to life and sharing it with the world and getting a response, whether that response be positive or negative. When your able to bring something you envisioned to life and share it with others and have it impact them enough to share their opinion on it is one of the most satisfying feeling as an artist. As an artist you want your pieces to invoke an emotional reaction to those you are sharing your work with. When your work can have that impact it’s a great feeling as an artist/creator. What makes it rewarding is that many may not see or understand the amount of work and dedication that goes into a project, so all they really see a lot of the time is the end result. So, for someone to see that result and have it cause a reaction from them is a testament to your ability to create something that gets the person thinking. I welcome both the positive feedback and negative feedback because If I either made one of the coolest designs someone has seen or the most hideous design they’ve seen the fact that it makes them feel anything or have an opinion on it makes me happy. One of the worst feeling as an artist is creating something that causes no response because to them it has no impact and can’t bring an opinion out of them, it makes your work feel unimpactful and ignored. But as long as my work can cause a response from just one person I feel that I’ve done my job, even if that one person really hates it, it still means it had an impact.
