We were lucky to catch up with Javier Tamez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Javier, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
At first it was very hard to get to practice as much as I could having a regular 9-5 and a family at home but, with every small opportunity around I took advantage of it to grow as an artist whether it was a design a drawing or a painting before I put that on my next tattoo. I believe that everything kinda lined up at the right time because without being a bit older I wouldn’t of put so much effort into growing outside of the job I had for fourteen years. But yes the feeling of having started this a lot earlier would of been better, it still there but I’m here now and that’s what matters.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
So to everyone out there my name is Javier Tamez Im a tattoo artist currently located at 405 ink Downtown Dallas, Im from Monterrey N.L. México I grew up with art all around me, even my job here previous to tattooing was at an art gallery and art school, where I was able to learn all kinds of mediums from paint to fused glass and this is why I knew that tattooing would be something I wanted to be a part of and here I am to help turn your tattoo ideas to reality. I enjoy doing floral designs color or black and gray and realistic tattoos or a mix of different styles as well as cover ups.
Im always looking to put a smile on my clients regardless of what we’re working on but I think that the cover ups really makes them smile, like thank god such persons name is finally gone or whatever lol
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
To me the book that definitely made a change in my habits and mindset is No excuses by Brian Tracy. I was introduced to it by one of my mentors Rember Orellana and every since I can go back to it an just listen to it in the car on my way to work.
I remember struggling through the day turning to the dark side but that definitely helped me see the light.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I feel like we have to constantly create content and keep up with everyone at all times to make sure people know that we’re engage with our audience.
I believe that’s a great way to put your self out there and let people know what you do and it takes time but it will pay off just stay on that path and continue going forward.
But like everything else it keeps growing and evolving and it’s gonna be never ending but we have to do it.
