We recently connected with Javier Luis and have shared our conversation below.
Javier , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I did all I could to make my main bread and butter through singing. But getting a recording contract with a major label was difficult, the independent labels that did offer me contracts were reviewed by my lawyers and turned out to not be good contracts after all. The venues here in NYC don’t want to pay singers and musicians their worth, Money is there for the making but the industry refuses to dish out the monies.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist / creative person is having the freedom to be who you are and create without being tied to a contract telling you what you should be and telling you what to sing and say and act.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The only goal or mission at this point is to SING. Create and sing. I’m in this for the love of music. Not the money, not the drugs , wild parties or sex. That’s not who I am. It’s all about the love of music.
