We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Javen Briggs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Javen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since elementary school I have always had a passion/interest in art, and that passion turned into a love as I grew up until I got to high school and joined the art program they offered students there. It was then that I tried finding careers that let me do what I loved the most, which was drawing at the time. I originally wanted to be an illustrator/graphic designer and create comic books/manga. But when COVID hit I got into customizing shoes and from the moment I customized my first pair I realized that I wanted to just create art, whether it be painting, drawing, tattooing, or any visual arts..
Javen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started customizing shoes right before Covid hit around December 2019. I was gifted a set of paint markers for Christmas that could be used to draw/paint on fabrics and different materials. I took a pair of old nike slides that I had laying around and I just started to doodle on them to see how they would turn out. Once I was done I was extremely satisfied with how they came out so I decided to post them. After a little while people just started coming to me asking could I customize their shoes for them. After that I started to research and found out that people do it for a living, and it seemed perfect because it mixed the two things I loved most; art and sneakers. I also realized that it would help me achieve my main goal in life, which is to be remembered and known by my art work.
The services I offer people are but not limited to: customizing sneakers, graduation caps, streetwear clothing and etc.
I think what sets me apart from others that are in the same field/industry is that I’m not limited to a specific style, I can adapt and create whatever is needed. And if I’m not well versed in that area I am willing to learn so that I can create a product that suits my customers needs.
I am most proud of the growth of my brand and skills as an artist and hope that I can continue to hone my craft so that the world can see the best art that I can produce, because my art is a reflection of who I am as an induvidual.
I would like any future customers to know that I take a lot of pride in my work , which will be shown in my pricing. As well as I try my very best to ensure that you as the consumer are satisfied with the product you purchase from me as well as the experience during the customization process.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal/ mission driving my creative journey is that I want the world to know my art, I want my art to surpass my life span and to continue to be seen throughout generations and provide people happiness and a sense of joy.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect in my opinion is the finished product of my work and the reaction that I get from the customers. Seeing them look at the pieces I create for them for the first time and the joy that shows up on their face is priceless. It keeps me going when business gets slow because I always remember no matter what I’m doing what I love and I’m providing a service that helps people in a way, whether big or small.
