We were lucky to catch up with Jauwan Stinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jauwan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always known that I was called to a creative career. I tried to go into Psychology in college but quickly switched to Music Therapy. My childhood was very chaotic so I never focused on my gifts until late high school/college.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been active on social media since 2010. I started out on Youtube and branched off years later. My niche has always been in beauty including haircare, skincare, makeup and fashion but in the last year I have really done alot of fashion content. I was a working esthetician before I had my youngest child so skincare is always going to be a part of my niche. I am also a local model, actress and singer. I have never been able to choose just one focus. I love all forms of entertainment and creative work. I love to help women feel beautiful again. I lost myself in marriage and raising my children and in the last few years I am finding myself and hope that I am inspiring others to go after their dreams as well.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Imposter syndrome is something I had to really fight against. There were many mindsets that I had set that were deep beliefs that I don’t get good things in my life. I felt like some people are just lucky. In lots of ways I had a very unlucky start but I have learned over the years that our mindset is EVERYTHING! My saying became “Why not me?” and after awhile it became true. It is true that some people have to work much harder to achieve things that seem to come easily to others but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. You can achieve anything if you believe, put in the work, and never give up.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Blood sweat and tears haha. But seriously I felt like no one cared about my content for years, but everytime I tried to give up I would get a sponsorship or something that told me to keep going. I think consistency is what built my audience. I just keep showing up and keep trying different techniques to find what feels good to me. I stopped worrying about number of likes and followers and became focused on just creating good content. My advice to anyone starting out is to try out a couple of niches until you find what feels like a good fit for you. Keep working on getting better and the audience will come. There are so many people on social media that will love your content and they will eventually find you.
