We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasun Jabbar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasun, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full time living from my artistry has been a journey. I started doing background and extra work to jump start my career. I also took 7+ years of acting classes. At 12 years old I booked my first professional acting job on Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns. It was a great experience especially for a first time on set. Fast forward years later to doing shows like Atlanta, Black Lightning, and BMF I’ve learned a great deal from every show I’ve done. I wouldn’t say there’s anything that I could have done to speed up my process as everything is God’s timing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into acting in my younger years because of all the energy I had. My teachers and my mother knew something like acting would be perfect for me. I’m glad I got started at such a young age. Growing into an adult combing talent with discipline and acquired learning has helped me become an overall better creative. Doing music was also something that always came natural to me. Those together make up my brand collectively. I think my vulnerability within both my acting and my music is something that makes me unique. When people see my story I want them to understand what’s possible when you always believe in yourself and never stop chasing your dreams. It’s no such thing as impossible!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to inspire the masses. I don’t necessarily have monetary goals. I just want to impact people. I believe when you move on from this life , your legacy is what matters. Not what you made. Not what you bought. I want to leave something behind that people will always be attached to. That’s what matters to me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I definitely had to unlearn not to take things personal. A lot of decisions that get made in the entertainment industry are strictly business. When you get your emotions too involved you only set yourself up to get hurt. Understand that what’s for you is for you , and what isn’t , isn’t. You’ll save yourself a lot of headache and heartache.
