Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Washington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Honestly, this is something that I wanted for as long as I remember. My mother has been performing and making music her whole life and had me doing the same. Most of my earliest memories are of me performing in plays and musicals as a young child. Being apart of a band when I was 10, playing and performing with adults all over the place. I truly feel that I was born to do this.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an experienced based artist. Living and learning has brought me to this point. Growing up performing and singing every chance that I could. From school musicals, to playing lead piano in the church choir. Traveling to compete in krump events, to performing at festivals and even opening for national artists like Toosii. The ups and the downs of life, it is all displayed in my music. I produce the beats, mix the music, and shoot my own videos most of the time. And music is just the start. There is a long list of ideas that I have to utilize all of my creativity. From an animated series, to comic books and video games.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist to me, is being able to truly connect with people. Being able to take my experiences and put it to music, and let people hear it and feel what I felt. Music is the best type of therapy in my opinion. I’ve written songs about things that I couldn’t normally even have conversations about. I have talked about things in my music that I’ve never said out loud. It’s the best way I can communicate my feelings.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Share the work. It doesn’t take much now with how technology is, and how connected we all are. Something simple like sharing someone’s art can do so much for that artist, and it’s easy and free. There are many ways that artists can bring in revenue from their work, sharing that work can help people break through the noise.
