Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Vaughn . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
Creating a more inclusive workplace is crucial for fostering creativity, innovation, and a sense of belonging for everyone. As a Black creative director aiming to promote diversity in the industry, here are some pieces of advice based on experiences and observations:
Representation Matters: Ensuring diverse representation in your team, from entry-level positions to leadership roles is important in an environment where people can easily be overlooked. By embracing diverse perspectives and experiences, they enrich the creative process and offer varied insights.
Provide Equal Opportunities: Ensuring equal access to opportunities for growth, development, and advancement. Mentorship programs and initiatives aimed at empowering individuals from underrepresented backgrounds can be impactful.
Address Biases and Microaggressions: Educate teams about unconscious biases and microaggressions. Implement training programs to foster awareness and create a more respectful environment.
My journey has had moments that showcased both inclusive and exclusive workplace cultures. In inclusive environments, I found myself more engaged, supported, and empowered to bring my authentic self to work. This, in turn, significantly boosted creativity and collaboration. Conversely, in less inclusive environments, I noticed a lack of representation and opportunities for diverse voices. It led to feelings of isolation and hindered the free flow of ideas, impacting productivity and morale.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

How did you build your audience on social media?
For those starting to build their social media presence, consistency, patience, and engagement are vital. It takes time to grow an audience, so focus on creating value for your followers and building meaningful connections. Experiment with different content formats and strategies, and don’t be afraid to adapt based on what resonates best with your audience. Building a strong social media presence is an ongoing process that requires dedication, creativity, and adaptability.
Define Your Brand and Audience: Clearly define your brand identity, message, and the audience you want to target. Understand their interests, behaviors, and preferences to tailor your content accordingly.
Consistent and Quality Content: Create high-quality and engaging content consistently. It could be informative, entertaining, or inspiring, but it should always resonate with your audience.
Engage with Your Audience: Actively engage with your audience by responding to comments, messages, and mentions. Foster conversations, ask questions and create interactive content to build a sense of community.
Be Authentic and Transparent: Authenticity is key to building trust and connecting with your audience. Share your story, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and genuine experiences.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been networking. Since I started my journey as a creative director back in 2021 I have fostered the ability to speak with people on a professional and conversational level. I think that if you continue to lead with a strong conversation that goes into what you do and what the other person does, you will find common ground in the spaces you want to be in. Effective networking involves being proactive, genuine and focused on building relationships rather than solely seeking immediate clients. It requires active participation in industry events, online forums, social gatherings, and one-on-one interactions. Providing value, being a resource, and cultivating genuine connections can lead to a steady growth in your clientele over time.
