We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Snell (Six O’clock). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.
Jason (Six O’clock) , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started writing raps in the 5th grade. It all started with alphabet rhymes and just kept progressing over the years. By the time I reached high school I was starting to freestyle and learn to improve more in the moment. During these years I began to realize I had a photographic memory and all of them words and raps where just in my head waiting to be used. It was like I had a mental rolodex, and I could just spin to any song and know every word. By the mid 90’s I was recording demos on a 4 Track recorder and passing them out to my friends on tape. all this time I was just mastering the craft and putting in my time behind the pen and mic. Then by the early 2000’s I was releasing music locally around the city. All this time I was just fine tuning my skills and recording full length albums as a solo artist and with my groups Insomniaks. Now I am preparing to release my 36 project and I wrote the entire album with no cuss words, and I didn’t use the word “Like” once. So, it is safe to say after 25 years I am a master at my craft.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Six O’clock I am an underground Hip Hop artist originally from Portland, Oregon and raised in Aurora, Colorado. I have been making moves throughout the underground for over 25 years I have toured and travelled throughout my region and the west coast many times over the years. I am actually going on tour this summer in 8 states and 16 dates to promote my new album “Garden Of Dreams” set for release 02.23.2024. I have a catalog with 36 releases dating back to the year 2000 some of my music is on streaming services but most of my work is sold directly to my fanbase in physical form Vinyl, CDs or Tapes. I also have a website therealsixoclock.com where I sell my own music for digital download as well.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In the summer of 2018, I suffered kidney failure and was hospitalized for almost a month over a week in the ICU and my family was told I probably wasn’t going to survive the incident. However, I survived and learned to walk and talk again. Since June 28th, 2018, I am alcohol and drug free. That time in my life taught me many lessons and one of those lessons was time is valuable and family is priceless.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission have always been to inspire and motivate others through my work ethic and quality output. All this work I have put in to cement my legacy as an artist and friend has been a driving force for me. Many times, I thought it was time to stop but my heart and creative spark is still very music alive. I believe in leading by example and lending my knowledge to younger artist starting out in the industry. Creativity is king and is something you shouldn’t try and turn off let that energy flow and share it with the world.
