Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Regis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents used to always say “You only get one name.” The meaning behind this was to focus on always doing your best and the long term impact of how you handle yourself. I learned attention to detail and striving for excellence. If I came home with a 97/100, my dad would say “What did you get wrong?” instead of congratulations. Then I would write out the correction to what I got wrong 10 times. He also taught me how to start studying for my finals 3 months ahead of time. At the time, all of these tasks helped me to be the professional I am today. I am prepared, thorough and always learning. I would not have been able to get through chiropractic school. I supported a wife and 3 kids, worked three jobs slept 3 and a half hours each night and still was able to graduate Cum Laude from Life University. I do not want it to seem like they were hard parents, they are known amongst their friends and family as being some of the nicest, most giving people. I have carried on that tradition in the community as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated as well as being a Co Chair for various community fundraising events.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I would say that my training and bedside manner/personality are what set me apart. There are not many other chiropractors that can say they worked in Physical Therapy, worked as a Certified Conditioning Specialist(step above a personal trainer), was published in NIH research, possess a Master’s in Sports Health Science focusing on Sports Injury Management and played Division 1 Football. All my injuries and car accidents also give me a special insight into recovery and injury prevention.
As a child of two medical doctors, I was planning to become a doctor, specifically a biomedical engineer. After sustaining many injuries as a linebacker in college, I discovered Physical Therapy and enjoyed the hands on aspect of patient care. After taking all the classes to apply to Physical Therapy School, 3 special physical therapists took me aside and told me that I should pursue being a chiropractor. I had the initial reaction of being seriously offended and even having my feelings hurt. This was mostly because of perception and at the end of the day, I realized that I did not even know ‘what chiropractors do’.
A couple weeks later, I had such bad midback pain that I could not get out of bed. I’ve broken ribs, shoulders, torn ACLs amongst many other injuries, but this was another level of pain. After a massage did not help, I went to see a chiropractor. I had only planned to talk to her, I had no interest in an evaluation. While I waited for her to finish with a patient, she had me read the intro to one of the chiropractic text books that explained how the muscles, nerves and bones are all connected. I thought ‘well this makes sense!’ After a conversation about her own path from Physical Therapy, she evaluated me, sent me for xrays, and then I received my first adjustment a few days later. ALL the pain was gone, and it was right then and there I decided that if I can make people feel that good, then that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!
My care is different in that I encompass physical therapy along with other modes of holistic health such as acupuncture, massage, nutrition, cold laser, frequency specific microcurrent, Graston technique, spinal rehabilitation/decompression and even mental health. I believe in addressing the entire body to maximize optimal health.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Two books have really helped me in this journey of being a business owner. The first glimpse of clarity was provided by The E-Myth, detailing why most small businesses fail and the different hats you need to wear aside from your craft. This book taught me how to compartmentalize my day and week by the different roles of the Producer, Manager and Organizer. The second book, The One Minute Manger, was suggested by my business coach. It taught me effective strategies and languages in managing employees. I am also in the process of reading John C. Maxwell Leadership 2.0.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I was always taught to have good work ethic and that hard work pays off. I am learning the concept of “Work Smarter, Not Harder”. This has motivated me to learn the world of social media and providing information through more efficient and accessible means such as Instagram and YouTube. Although I do like being out in the community educating through lunch and learns and spinal screenings, this is a medium that resonates with more potential business and spread with greater ease. I also now utilize an Electronic Health Records(EHR) program in my office. This has help me cut down on the time I would usually spend taking notes, and my staff can use their time to focus more on the patients and care plans instead of filing and pushing paper.
