Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Pritchard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jason, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
During my childhood in the 1980s, I lived in a small village in East Anglia, UK, and had to come up with my own methods of keeping entertained. Our TV only had only four channels and video games did not have the fancy graphics or immersive game play that kids enjoy today, so I spent a lot of my childhood drawing and sketching instead. Luckily, my father had his own printing business and with it came a lot of spare paper, plenty of art pens, and other art supplies in his workshop to help hone my drawing skills from an early age.
Despite my early artistic upbringing I ended up academically studying the sciences and it wasn’t until my early 20’s living in London when I picked up a paintbrush again, learning watercolor as a means to unwind after my day job. I moved to the US in the early 2000’s and then studied oil painting at the Art Students League of New York. Taking classes with some of the league’s best instructor and exhibiting in the annual student concours was such a wonderful experience.
Jason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an oil painter focused primarily on seascapes of the New England region. I completed a series of over fifty paintings of Fairfield Country in Connecticut before attempting my latest project which is painting the beaches of Cape Cod. I was recently honored to be selected as one of the Cape Cod Emerging Artists in 2020 by Cape Cod Art magazine, acknowledging my growing body of Cape Cod artwork which now spans the beaches from the Bourne to Harwich, MA. I’ve a long way to go to finishing the project, but when I’m not painting, you can find me riding the waves along the New England coast. Surfing is not only a thrilling experience, but it also inspires my artwork by allowing me to fully immerse myself in the natural environment.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding and satisfying part of being an artist is creating a unique piece of artwork that is meaningful on an emotional level to a collector. Its always such an honor when someone buys one of your paintings generally, but often its the emails or conversations that follow that make it a highly fulfilling experience. People often connect with me to express their appreciation of the artwork and I love hearing stories on the feedback they receive from their respective families and friends.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As mentioned earlier, I took sciences for my core subjects at school and eventually ended up taking physics at degree level. The lesson I had to unlearn is never let your study or work choices define or restrict your creative passions. While my studies and job remained important, I found a new sense of purpose and fulfillment through my art as I came back to it later in life. It allowed me to pour my creative energy into both pursuits, resulting in a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment in life.
