We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Nguyen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jason, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?

I think it takes ingenuity, perseverance, passion and adaptability. Everyone I look up to has a varying degree of each. But I think what really stands out to me is that they have a fire that sparks inspiration in others. So make sure you sparkle.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I always knew I wanted to do something creative. I went to school as a graphic artist which I enjoyed but quickly found out that cubicle life was not for me. I found my passion for the makeup/beauty industry purely out of a fluke! It was a side gig I did to just to help pay for college, but I quickly found myself enjoying it more than what I majored it. One of my favorite things about my career is that I get to connect with such inspiring people. I’ve met so many of my favorite people from Fashion designers to aspiring models.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

I found the best way for growing clientele is making meaningful connections in your industry! Word of mouth has been such a powerful force for me. But I find building clientele is just one amazing aspect. The people I gravitate and connect with also help bring the clients I love to work with the most! It’s a win win for me. So be kind and put out what you want to attract. You’ll be surprised what comes your way by being your most authentic and positive self.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Everyone wants their brand to be perfect, right? I struggled for a really long time with this concept of perfection, specifically through social media. For awhile it seemed fun, but I quickly found trying to keep up with the ever changing algorithms to be hard. My big lesson is to be proud of your work. Success is not defined purely on likes and online attention.
