We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Nash a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I’ve had an extremely unconventional career. I owned a coffee shop at the age of 29 only to sell it and begin college at the age of 33. I graduated from Oakland University at the age of 37, but I quickly learned that corporate America was not for me. So, I began my YouTube channel at the age of 39.
Lucky for me, my parents have supported me through the entire process including my 4-month camping trip in November 2019 and my camper conversion in April 2021. Video creation gives me a reason to travel, explore, and create. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to say that my parents are my #1 fans!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in Kalamazoo, MI and graduated with a Marketing degree from Oakland University.
When I moved to Longmont, CO in November 2016, I fell in love with all the beautiful hiking trails that Colorado has to offer. So, in April 2017, the Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show was born.
In November 2019, I took a 4-month camping trip in my pop-up camper. This gave me an opportunity to travel, explore, unwind, and create lots of great videos.
In December 2020, I began recording a series of downhill skiing videos in Colorado. These quickly became popular and my passion for YouTube was greater than ever!
I actually had so many great memories of my first camping trip that I decided to do another one. So, in April 2021, I converted a 12-foot enclosed trailer into a camper and documented the whole process.
In June 2021, I reached 1,000 subscribers and was able to monetize my channel.
* I reached 2,000 subscribers in January 2023.
* Just two months later, I reached 10,000 subscribers (March 2023).
* One month after that, I reached 20,000 subscribers (April 2023).
* And one month after that, I reached 25,000 subscribers (May 2023).
The Nash Potatoes Outdoor Show allows me to share all of my experiences with you. Join me on my adventure as I talk about life, laughter, exploration, and creating content.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
When you find a creator who you truly enjoy, the most impactful things you can do are… 1. Subscribe to their channel.
2. Watch videos in their entirety.
3. Watch the ads and click on them.
4. Like & comment on their videos.
5. Share their videos on your social media pages.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’m a big fan of Gary Vayneychuk! He shares a lot of stuff about his daily life and is very inspiring. He says we need to stop caring about what other people think and just do what we love.
It’s not easy spending so much time and energy on content creation when…
* You get negative feedback.
* You’re not making any/much money.
* You’re not gaining many subscribers.
* Your videos aren’t getting many views.
GaryVee has inspired me to stick with it. My goal is to make each video better than the last!
