We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Murillo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It all started for me as a child for me watching & listening to sports, pro wrestling & music on the tv & radio i would imitate the announcers doing my own play-by-play acting like i was there at the game, i would imagine i was on the radio djaying & mixing music & doing shoutouts on air,I had my old double deck cassette tape casio boombox, i’m showing my age here lol, back when i was young making my own mixtapes it was so much fun & kept me up many nights.
I loved music since i was a kid from old school music before i was born like, The Temptations, and Gloria Estefan i would hear it every weekend growing up in my mom’s apartment to listening to Slick Rick, Craig Mac, LL Cool J, Will Smith & so many more i knew one day i will pursue my dream & do this for real.
Jason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, i got my start in the industry by going to our local community cable access television station in Manhattan, New York (MNN) back when they were using VHS & Hi-8 Tapes to broadcast back in 2001-2002 i went on to training, take classes & learned about television & studio production i aired my first televised show on cable access when i was 20 years old our own backyard wrestling show lol, It was so much fun to be on TV even if it was cable access i felt like i was a star.
I would continue my education & learning by taking classes at our local community college, & through trial & error i was filming with my camera every day, learning what works & what doesn’t as i always say practice makes perfect and that’s what putting in the work does day in day out, you’ll end up having it down to a science.
I got into YouTube when it began back in the mid-2000s & created my own channel on there showing our backyard wrestling It was a game changer to be able to have millions of people see your content from around the world i had millions of subscribers and viewers on there i was viral before that was a thing before Instagram & TikTok lmao, YouTube would take down the channel down sometime after for having too much violence & copyright issues lol.
I would move on from producing underground wrestling by the end of 2000s & focus my efforts back to radio & television.
I got into the radio/podcasting game online a few years later working on different online stations producing and hosting/djaying & breaking new artists people never heard of before.
I started full-time on the local radio station in Buckingham, Virginia at WJRRadio from 2014-2017 producing, hosting, djaying i did the morning show daily Monday to Friday & Sports Talk Show to much success. Shoutout to Jimmy Ford for giving me my first big break on the radio and mentoring me and show me the ropes & the art of being a true DJ.
I moved back to New York City in early 2017 in part due to a house fire where i lost everything and found myself homeless again for the first time since i was a kid, Also because i knew it was time for me to take my career to the next level & there was only place where that would happen & that was in New York, so i went back to where i started at (MNN) cable access television station in Manhattan to get back into Television Production in a new digital age, I quickly pick up where i left off years ago it felt like i never left. I went from doing an online radio show in a trailer in the middle of nowhere in the woods to doing a tv/radio show in a studio in the middle of Manhattan, NYC.
In 2018 i would create & produce a new music television/radio platform with Veronica Gonzalez known on the local indie music scene as “Vero G.” for Indie & Unsigned music artists to have a platform to get known & showcase their amazing talent for the world to see “Vero G Spotlight TV” then “Vero G Spotlight Radio Show” & the rest is history.
Together with Veronica Gonzalez & my lifelong friend William Wright we created a platform & changed the whole game, that others imitate & try to copy our style & formula to this very day.
We signed up with a Major online radio station in NYC called DTFRadio in early 2020 right before covid hit & kept going until the station closed it doors in 2023. We would go on to work with Major stations such as Hot 97, and Wpat 930 AM since that time.
Now we have our own online radio station Whosnextnyc Radio (whosnextnyc.com) & also are on iHeartradio.com, Spotify, Apple Podcast, YouTube & many other streaming sites to keep this platform going to support and showcase artists from around the world which is heard by millions of people.
We provide artists with a real alternative to the mainstream music industry that is full of corruption, greed, and politics to gatekeepers who lock out so many talented artists from having their shot to take it to the next level.
So with that being said we help artists get on radio platforms for real, get them on television & radio to print & digital magazines, and the top streaming platforms to shoot their latest music videos and perform in front of hundreds of people at lounges, nightclubs & venues.
We have grown to become one of the biggest platforms in the Tri-state area, NY, NJ, CT for indie music artists & to have people travel from around the world to attend & perform at our events & be on our tv & radio shows.
What I’m most proud of is never giving up throughout all the ups & downs in my life, setbacks & victories i never gave up the dream and what i was born to do.
What sets me apart from the others is my drive, my passion, my body of work speaks for itself.
Sure there is plenty of more talented or popular DJs, TV, and Radio Producers out there but one thing they can’t match is my work ethic respectfully I will outwork them every time, i do this 24/7 this ain’t a 9-5 job for me.
So when a client books me for an event, project whatever, i will give them my all I don’t half-ass anything that’s the difference between me and some others in my industry.
I love it when i put an unknown shy artist who’s never been on tv or radio before & they open up from that shell before you’re very eyes and their true self comes out and shines bright like a diamond & the next thing you know they blow up and make it big & knowing that i played a role in making that happen is amazing and my gift to give to Inspire others to reach for their dreams just like i did.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Well, it would be when i was locked up in Rikers Island at 17 years old facing attempted murder charges thinking my life was over even contemplating suicide, Lucky for me I survived multiple suicide attempts & drug overdoses & left the street life behind me, and went to film school and through family support and faith in god i overcame what was meant to destroy me.
So if you want some inspiration and motivation then take a look at me & my life to help you with your path.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To help & Inspire others to reach for their dreams in life, i want people to look at all that someone like me overcame to be where I’m at today talking to millions of people through TV & radio, that was counted out, looked down on, laughed at to say “Fuck what people think” I’m going to make it anyway.
So if i never gave up then why should you? That is my mission & goal every day i wake up is to be the best that i can be.
