We were lucky to catch up with Jason Moran recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far is my EP, “Changes”. The journey began in 2019 after I released my first single, “Broken.” Hearing the positive feedback inspired me to keep writing, and that’s when I started working on my next song “Changes.” I really took my time writing this new song, it wasn’t until 2021 that I officially started recording it. I had multiple demos of the piano parts and vocals, but recording the drums is what really started to bring it to life. 2021 was the same year I started coming up with ideas for other new songs. I finally realized I wanted this release to be more than just a single, I wanted it to be an EP that told a real story between all the songs.
Things became very busy and I wasn’t able to complete the first song. After a year, I finally had an amazing opportunity in March of 2022 to work with a producer in LA. It was here where I tracked the vocals and piano. After that, the project was put on hold again until 2024. In college, one of the options for my senior project was to write, record, produce, release, and market an EP. I knew this was the motivation I needed to finally finish what I started. Having a real deadline pushed me to stay on track and start executing. Over the years I had written so many new songs, but this one EP was holding me back…I had to finish it before releasing any other music. I went full throttle in 2024, working on the project for hours nearly every day. I had to finish all the songwriting, record the demos, and get to the studio. No more over-perfecting every little detail, it was time to make this project a reality. All songs had multiple versions, multiple demos, and were finally ready to be recorded. I had written all the parts, but featured a few musicians for instruments I wasn’t good at, such as guitar and bass.
Finally in April of 2025, I was able to release my EP “Changes”. I was successful at creating my vision. A powerful story is told throughout the four songs. The goal was to write all the songs where it would be up to interpretation, and all the songs reflect this. With each song I challenged myself more and more with my songwriting. An example of this is “3am in Bed”, which shifts between live and MIDI instruments and uses reversed elements for emotional impact. In the end, it became exactly what I had envisioned and more. After six years, I was finally able to tell my story.

Jason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jason Moran, I’m 22 years old and based on the East Coast. I’m a freelance musician, songwriter, and producer. My love for music started when I was eight years old, growing up in a home that constantly played artists like Billy Joel and The Beatles. My older brother started learning the piano, and I knew I wanted to learn an instrument too. I started taking drum lessons, and for my ninth birthday, received my first drum kit. By the time I was 13, I joined a performing arts program. It was here where my passion for drumming really took off. I made incredible life long friends, and continued to push myself to improve as a musician. Over the years I created my own bands and got to perform at various different venues around my area. Eventually, I became interested in learning piano, which opened the door to songwriting. The better I got at writing, the more I was interested in learning more instruments, and learning how to record. Looking back, I’m mostly proud of the talented musicians I’ve had the chance to work with, as well as releasing my first EP this year. I try to write songs that people can relate to, and my goal is to reach a wider audience and create music that genuinely resonates with listeners.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the crowd engagement while performing. Seeing people enjoy the music and knowing that what we’re doing makes them happy is what motivates me to keep going as an artist. I love talking with people after a show and hearing their thoughts. In my opinion, all feedback is good feedback. Even potential criticism is an opportunity to learn and grow. Listening to my audience is something I really care about and take seriously. Being able to connect with and learn from the people who listen to our music is what makes performing so rewarding to me.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot I had to make so far was transferring out of the college I wanted to go to, and figuring out what direction my life should take from there. I was accepted into a university in Nashville to study the entertainment industry, and I went in with high expectations. After a very difficult first semester, I made the tough decision to leave the university. The next few months were very difficult, I had to question what I really wanted and whether college was the right path for me at all. I was able to fly out to LA for a month where I got to see my brother in his final year at college. Seeing his experience really inspired me to give college one more chance. The following fall, I enrolled at a new university a bit closer to home, studying music industry/technology with a minor in entrepreneurship. It was one of the best decisions I made. Everything at the University clicked. I met some great people, loved all my classes, connected with my professors, and gained valuable insight into the music industry. Leaving home for Nashville and then switching directions again wasn’t easy, but in the end, that pivot helped me find the path that truly fit.
