Hi Jason , thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?

Flat out – cannabis was one of the main things that saved my life. I have suffered from chronic pain, have been on tons of prescribed opiates, have had dozens and dozens of epidurals, ablations, discograms, spine stimulators, etc to try and help my issues. I had a L4-L5-S1 fusion done to hopefully get some relief and all hell broke. I didn’t heal quickly, pain went through my whole body now and I could not function. I ended up spending close to 3 years in bed unable to do anything. Occasionally I would be able to get out shortly, but not often and missed a lot of life events. The amount of prescribed medicines I was on was obscene and I still wasn’t getting rid of the pain I was having. My wife and I started researching cannabis and products like CBD oil and started to use it. It helped and soon I was able to go up and down stairs in the house, then moved on to walking around the block, etc. I learned that there was more to cannabis than just “THC”, there’s over a hundred cannabinoids that do amazing work that aren’t intoxicating. In addition to the major cannabinoids, I learned about terpenes and how they can dictate the way your body received cannabinoids. Indica and Sativa are just physical descriptions of the plants, it is the terpene and cannabinoid profile that gives you the benefits of the cannabis plant. With this knowledge, I was able to start targeting specific ailments with specific profiles and get some relief. When I approached my pain management Dr’s, they were not really cooperative with me wanting to get off my prescription pain killers so I did it cold turkey, which I know now, is extremely dangerous to do. It was absolute hell and took months but with the proper use of CBD and cannabis products I made it through. After that, with the help of my wife, we found out why I was not really responding to any other treatment – I was diagnosed with CDC positive Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, lyme, bartonella, babesia and other tickborne illnesses. While we were trying to figure out the new challenges ahead, I took my obsession and knowledge I had for the cannabis plant and started experimenting and making my own products. Over an 8 year period, I was able to come up with a product that has multiple transdermal properties for max relief. I started creating specialized tinctures that had more than just CBD with products that contained CBG for gut and brain health and CBN to help with the chronic anxiety and sleepless nights that come chronic illness. My wife, who does body work / massage therapy, started asking if she could use some of the salves I made on her clients if they wanted and I said yes. It turns out others started getting relief as well and I soon figured out that we should offer this product to as many people as possible. After I got my picc line out, after 2 years of hardcore lyme and co-infection treatment, I decided to make this business something more than just selling on the side and Cosmec Healing was born.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I use to be a really active person and heavily involved in the community, at one point sitting the boards of 5 non-profits, including 1 of my own as well as The Chamber Of Commerce in Frederick. I ran a kickball league in Frederick and did multiple charity events for local non-profits. When the lyme and co-infections kicked in, it shut me down and I lost all of that. I basically had to reinvent myself and it took years to get my health back but through out all of my treatment, cannabis was the main go to and kept me out of pain management. It is still tough to do everyday but the good days are slowly outweighing the bad, I usually have 4 good days a week and 3 where I just have to allow myself to recoup. As a lot of others, I do one day at a time. Sometimes I am down for a week, sometimes I am good for a week, but cannabis remains a staple of my treatment.

My name is on these products so I want them to reflect in the quality. While I went through years of hell and trauma, it has been a blessing as I was able to use the products I developed to help others and quite frankly, that is extremely rewarding. I have worked with everyone from the severely broken to professional athletes that have been a part of the Super Bowl.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

When I started the business, I did not have access to a lot of funds so I went in house with label design and used in inexpensive equipment. I stayed within my lane, focused on a set skew and started to build up some revenue. Then I was able to pay to get things looking more professional and larger batches. A true grassroots project.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I honestly think my sincerity to want to help others reflects in Cosmec products. I just want to help others and there are many people that have watched my journey from my “previous” life to this current life and there is some trust there. People seem to have a great deal of trust in me, as I am a consumer of these products as well. When the customer has trust in you, they will not only be repeat customers but will also tell others about you. I have spent minimum on advertising to help keep costs down and the word of mouth route has worked out fairly well.
