We recently connected with Jason McPhail and have shared our conversation below.
Jason , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
As an artist I think hip hop has a negative connotation, generally speaking. I speak for myself when I say I speak from my personal experiences as a black man in America. With that being said I feel because our reality here isn’t the prettiest it’s often criticized as being a negative influence or promoting violence. In my opinion that’s like saying American media outlets promote racism when they report it’s existence.

Jason , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an artist and fledgling actor. I’m currently in “Smoke & Ashes” which is featured on Tubi with over 3 million views first week of release. I’m in a few unreleased films as well as an extra on a sketch comedy series on YouTube called “Where’s My Show”. Professionally I’m a project manager for a roofing company. I’m an herbalist as well. I make herbal teas for my clients specific ailments to try to decrease their use of man made pharmaceuticals that typically harm our bodies. These days I’m most proud of the teas because I feel I’m helping people. It caters to my humanitarian side. The acting is an exciting new venture. It’s a passion I finally have the space to pursue. I’ve done “extra” work on a few productions and recently earned a role on an upcoming film I’m not allowed to name yet. I’m looking to grow my brand as an actor. I’m excited to earn my way onto quality productions by earning the respect of fellow actors during auditions and building a strong reputation as being easy to work with on set. I’m actually phasing out the music due to its financially restrictive nature. Streaming has basically ruined the industry. It’s the only industry where thousands of people can love what you do ain’t it won’t equate to a decent living.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support shows up in dollar amounts. If you have a favorite artist, don’t just stream them. Buy their music and merchandise. Streaming platforms pay artists fractions of a penny for a stream so it doesn’t really help the artist. Also buy tickets to their live performances. That’s where the majority of artists money derives from.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to touch people worldwide through your music. There are always people that can relate to your individual story and through music you can let them know that they’re not alone in their experiences. I also love when people approach me reciting my lyrics or telling me their favorite song of mine.
