We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
I was trying to sell art after school and wanted to do something different and started using paper as a medium. I would spend hours going through magazines and cut out blocks of color. I would then cut them into tiny pieces and use them as paint in two dimensional art.
Jason, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been interested in art my whole life and went to art school. I started doing craft markets to sell my art. My art is influenced by animals, nature, food, music, and other stuff that interests me. I love the process of figuring out a subject and trouble shooting the best way to complete the process. When the art is completed I feel a sense of accomplishment and when people like it and it sells I feel proud knowing someone else will enjoy it as much as I did.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I was doing a weekend long event and I had a piece for sale for $250. This lady really liked it but said it was a little out of her price range and walked away. I thought for about ten seconds and chased her down and told her I would sell it for $200. She bought it. The following day she emailed me and was so thankful. Her husband had passed away and it reminded her of him. I was so happy that I made that sale.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I constantly participate in in person craft fairs and that’s how I get new clients.
