We recently connected with Jason Grayer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
When we started our entrepreneurship journey, we knew that the whole family would play an instrumental role. What we did not anticipate was how impactful it would be for everyone. We have learned that having family carve out their role, as opposed to being told what to do, works best. For example, when we ran our Summer Camp in 2022 we had no idea how much our daughter would embrace being at the Camp everyday. She wound up coordinating the activities throughout each day with the campers. There was a time when I told her to stay home and enjoy HER Summer but she stated that going to the Gym with Camp was how she wanted to spend her Break. It was a very heart-warming moment for our family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I, Jason, spent my professional career in sales and sales management for companies of all shapes and sizes. Jenny, my wife, has worked as a Neo Natal Nurse Practitioner her entire career. It was our desire to provide a safe place for children to learn and grow and play together. That mission led us to owning a We Rock the Spectrum franchise. In the nearly 2 years that the Gym has been open we have been able to host parties, private events, birthdays, play dates, group outings, dance classes, music classes, cooking classes and other activities. These have brought us much closer to the community as a whole and we look forward to growing the offering of classes and opportunities for more kiddos and their families.
One thing that helps to differentiate us is how we view the kiddos as part of a larger family than just customers.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My best advice is to work to keep it fun and engaging. This sounds very cliche but my philosophy is to lead how I like to be lead. It is also important to let those working with you to know when a job is being done well and to praise them for the effort AND the result.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We are part of a franchise and we bought into the franchise in 4Q of 2019. Then I left the workplace in early 2020 to focus on getting our business open and the COVID lockdowns started shortly thereafter. It was a challenge trying to balance and manage all of those dynamics. Additionally, the commercial real estate market presented a greatly challenge than anticipated. All told, it was 2 years and 2 months from start to Grand Opening (certainly longer than the 3-6 months we expected).
