We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Gorley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?

CiferNoise was founded in late October 2019. By the end of February, we were ready to go to launch. Our first major client was scheduled on March 13, 2020. Little did we know coming into 2020, we would be on the verge of a pandemic. COVID had gripped its hold upon society. Events had come to a halt, society to confined to their living quarters, and businesses closed their doors.

Our business relies on people gathering in public spaces. With the access to gatherings coming to a halt, our company was in jeopardy of survival. We had to refund most of the down payments for events scheduled in 2020.

I had to shift our approach to how we operated. We cut advertising spending, and the brainstorming board was increased to determine how to bring attention to our company and focus only on DIY rentals.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Jason Gorley, co-founder and CEO CiferNoise Productions. I want to open up with people by telling them I got into this business from a push from an ex-girlfriend and a cover letter. I was always driven to bring people together via events or parties like we called back in the day in college. In the end, they always enjoyed bringing happiness to others.

CiferNoise Production is an event production company that focuses on silent disco. We fulfill the need of our clients in the market of unique events and solutions where noise ordinances exist. CiferNoise put customer service first from the booking to the day of the event.

Our mission is to evolve the human experience’s relationship with sound at any given place or event. We seek to bring awareness by applying silent disco to the sub-categories of the event industry.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Consistency has helped me build my reputation. Furthermore, networking with my peers within my industry has helped me get word of mouth out about my work ethic.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

The road to building or achieving success is always challenging. Where I am today wasn’t easy to reach, and my road to becoming a business owner has seen some ups and downs.

The first challenge I faced, unknown to me then, was leaving my nine-to-five job at a telecom retail sales job to hop in a car driving for Uber & Lyft. I had to learn the discipline to earn the weekly amount needed. I was in charge of when I wanted to work and play.

By 2017, I started working for a growing small event production company, and there were struggles. My mindset had only partially left the grantee paycheck behind, as I still depended on Uber & Lyft to support my life. I describe this time in my life as working for a startup. Every day was something new and exciting that we were building. Yet in late 2018 and earlier 2019, there was an apparent rift growing between one of the co-founders and me. Thus I knew it was time I had to leave.

At the end of October 2019, I found CiferNoise Productions. I was going into 2020 with optimism for the new venture in my life. Little did I know the most complex test of my life would begin. The world I thought we would be working in got flip upside down. A global pandemic changed the entire dynamic. It challenged me at my mental core, I even wondered if I should move on from the event industry, but I endured the opening storm. In the end, it was the best thing that could have happened to a new business and its owner, as it taught me the most about how to pivot when uncertainty existed constantly.
