We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Goodrich a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
Asking friends and family should seem like a no brainer – a simple task – but in reality is not that simple. You really have 2 different types of friends and family supporters. You have some that will support your business, attend your events, and truly support you. Additionally you have those that will support by sharing social posts and help spread the word – which is what I refer to as a virtue signal. Although these are easy things – they require a little time but not money – they are very beneficial to help grow a business. Unfortunately, this isn’t always realistic and you will not see as many supporters as you may expect. Sometimes you won’t get support unless it’s convenient for them.
Taking action is important when supporting your friends and family and now that I’ve experienced it first hand I realize that.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My moment of resilience begins just as COVID and all of its fear was sweeping the nation. Everything was in place to begin construction and equipment purchase, as well as a lease agreement. Fortunately for me (I say this now), things were shut down and we went into lockdown without initially breaking ground or making any expenditures. For over a year, I stayed in contact with everyone involved with the project. I finalized the lease agreement, sent a down payment to my artist, as all aspects of this project started to fall into place beautifully. I’m a very spiritual person, and believe that divine intervention played a significant role in the timing and execution of this project. To further this point, our grand opening fell directly on my birthday! I was frustrated and feeling sorry for myself for over a year before I started to realize near completion, that this all happened for a reason and, the timing was beyond special. This situation further bolstered my faith and gratitude. I give thanks every day for my dream coming to fruition.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When covid hit – everything was shut down. This was when I was planning to open my gym and all of a sudden, my plans had to change. I was in the process of building out the new gym and planning. I had to go from frustration to pivoting so I can still reach my goal. I took my frustrations and instead realized that this was a blessing in disguise. Thankfully this happened before I started construction so instead of being interrupted mid project it would have been worst. I then understood that this was meant to be and actually saved me from having to restart from scratch. I pivot from frustration, to understanding, to being grateful. A higher power saved me and therefore the timing was even better when I was finally able to open post covid. A year and a half of staying on top of the project and keeping my motivation was challenging but worth it and I’m now able to look back and be grateful for the way it worked out.
