We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Fun a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I’ve often reflected back on my journey and how I’ve been able to turn my hobby of playing with magic tricks to a career of performing professional magic shows as my full-time job! It took me 10 years to make the switch from performing my first paid show to leaving my corporate job to become a full-time magician! So, how did I do it? Looking back I’ve pieced together a few important things which I now call The F.U.N. Formula.
F is for friends. I can’t do eveything on my own, and I especially don’t have the knowledge to do everything on my own, even if I wanted to. BUT, I do have friends that know things and can do things that I can’t. So, I’ve had help along the way!
U is for understanding, more specifically, understanding others! When you understand what other need and want, you can help them and that in turn will come back to you! Some call this karma. This can also mean to understand my audience as a performer! Just put yourself in other people’s shoes!
N is for Nutella… because when you add Nutella to things, it just tastes better! Add Nutella on a slice of bread, add it to a banana, add it to your pancakes! So, how can you add Nutella to you marketing and life (and in my case, also to my magic shows)? Well, you can do this by two ways: by learning something new and by sharing it with others! Don’t be afraid to learn new skills and do new things. And don’t forget to share that with others!
By following this F.U.N. Formula, I’ve been able to grow my business and make my shows even better!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I switched to being a full-time magician, I had to think outside the box to set me apart from all the other magicians. I’ve done that two different ways. First, with the help of others (remember the F.U.N. Formula?), I’ve developed a character named Jason Fun. I like to think of my character, Jason Fun, as a mix between PeeWee Herman, Mr. Rogers, and Blipi, all combined into one person! I have a specific wardrobe and look as Jason Fun, and act certain ways in different circumstances. So, I’m not just showing magic tricks, I have a whole persona that I am acting as. When someone wants entertainment, I don’t want them to just think about having a magician, I want them to specifically want Jason Fun!
The other way I’ve set myself apart, is that I receive yearly trainings from celebrity magicians. I travel across the United States, including to Las Vegas, several times a year to be trained by other professional and celebrity magicians on how to perform. If you look at my website, in my bio section, you can see pictures of me with several famous magicians who have personally taught me.
I’m also always looking for the newest ideas in the world of magic and creating my own routines to perform. So I’m not showing and performing the same tricks that every other magician is doing, and that you can find online.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! Magic Clubs! One day I was Googling magic shops near me, and I came across a local Society of American Magicians club in my area! I went, and joined, and became friends with several who have helped me in my journey! Had I known that magic clubs existed earlier in my career, I think it would have sped my process and journey to becoming a full-time magician (remember the F.U.N. Formula?).
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media is a funny thing. I’ve had someone else who has a social media following in the millions manage my social media accounts. They did my videos and posted them. I then took over editing my own videos and posting. Some videos have gone “semi-viral” on various social media platforms, but nothing too big. BUT, I’ve realized that isn’t my goal. I post between 5-7 times a week on social media. My goal is to stay top-of-mind in people’s eyes, so people can see that I’m still in business. It also serves as a portfolio. Sometimes people ask me if I have any pics and/or videos of my magic shows. I always point them to my social media.
So, my advice to you, if you are just starting to build a social media presence is to post regularly. Post often. You wanna show people that you are in business and an expert in your field!
