We recently connected with Jason Frisby and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea of Hearts Thru Hands came from stepping back and viewing the various avenues of entertainment that i was providing.
I started off as a poet and then wrote 3 books. My writings are always honest and heartfelt, so i was expressing my heart through m hands. Then i added in the craft of DJing, another talent that requires the use of hands, so “My Heart Thru My Hands” made the most sense for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Back home in New Jersey, a friend brought his poetry book to my house. Knowing i had been writing poems for years already, seeing this real-life influence, i told myself i would write my book by my next birthday (8 months away) and i did.
When i moved to Atlanta, i got much deeper into the poetry world and the art of performance. After a few years of strictly being a poet, i used my mental musical catalog to begin DJing. Between doing poetry (as ‘JFris’) and DJing (as ‘DJ FrisBeats’), it has placed me on TV, radio, the featured act in multiple states, and now, possibly most proudly, it has allowed me to be the creator and director of my first documentary, “Living In A Renaissance” which highlights how Atlanta is like the new Harlem Renaissance.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It not exactly a precise story, but yet a life story as my full-time battle with depression has led me to where i am today. Most of my time has been spent in painful darkness, but i was able to convert it into positivity through my poetry (thus, ‘My Heart Thru Hands’).
I used poetry to be therapeutic for myself, but also encouraging for others. I did not want to tell my story for any sort of sympathy, but rather to let other people struggling with depression know that they are not alone, plus it can be turned around and something positive and productive can be made from it.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
My real last name is Frisby and after one of featured performances (one where i was essentially the name on the marquee, so-to-speak), i asked someone i trusted and respected about what i could do to make my show even better. He told me i should have little frisbees that i toss out into the audience, so i created them from there.
It is a long story, but believe it or not, old school wrestling, and the Macho Man Randy Savage in particular, is how i was able to craft my look, my persona, my products. The wrestlers would usually have good looking, color-coordinated gear, catchphrases, and a symbol that represented them (Savage perfected it all). I knew i needed a great symbol, came up with one where it is my hands holding a heart, but the heart is sort of blended with the hands. With a great logo, i started off selling shirts and expanded from there.
