We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I currently like the ideas that I am working on. I started crafting copper pieces a year ago (2022), I was talking to a monk at a Vegan Festival in Las Vegas. At the time, I was wearing a tourmaline and hematite headband that I made out of string needle threads. I was told to replace the thread with copper wire. I then created a copper “crown” with the stones wrapped into it. I then used the remaining wire to create rings. I started displaying my copper by wearing them to different events and always received compliments. I then began using my creativity to create more copper pieces. Like a pyrite wrapped glasses frames.
A year later.. Here I am… crafting copper into my photography canvases. It feels like a new evolution in my artistic career.
Jason , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been creating digitally since grade school. I started off with Adobe Photoshop when it used to come with Adobe Image Ready…. I have a Computerize Graphics and Publishing Certificate from Golightly Career and Technical Center. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Illinois Institute of Art of Chicago in Game Art and Design.
I have worked in the Film Industry for 3 years when I was living in Los Angeles as a Sound Mixer and Post Production Audio Engineer. I also picked up Photography when I was in Los Angeles. I have worked as a Sound Engineer and Music Producer in Atlanta.
I work with different mediums of art – 1. Photography 2. Copper/Jewelry Crafting, 3 .Graphic Design 4. Music Prodction 5. Sound Designer 6. Videography 7. Animation.
I offer social media content creation and managing.
I am most proud of the fact that I have many artistic outlets. My clients currently like my copper work and photography. My brand is Jay Free Media www.jayfreemedia.com
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am on a mission to connect with the communities that I am surrounded by. I also want to help businesses create revenue through a social media presence and word of mouth. I have recently had an art installation with Principal Leslee Bullock at Burns Park Elementary in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I donated my ” Be Free. Be You.” Photography piece on an 18×24 canvas. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I never realized how how much courage it takes to move to a new city alone. If you don’t know anyone, you have to create new friends and network. You have to have an approachable energy. I was in Las Vegas at one point and met people that I have only interacted with one time…. that let me stay on their couch for a few days until I had enough money to get me an Air BnB to pursue my business. When you have talent and believe in your work so much, that others can sense it and help along the way… is always a good feeling.
