Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
At 19 years old, I decided that I was going to start my own martial arts school. With no start up capital, no college degree and no back up plan,, I decided that I was going to turn my passion into my profession.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Jason Flame, owner of Moorpark Karate & Krav Maga in Moorpark, CA, started his martial arts training in 1985 and opened his first school in 1996. He is an 8th Degree Black Belt in American Tang Soo Do and also holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga, Black Belt in Ketsugo Ju Jitsu & Black Belt in Combat Hapkido. He has served as a martial arts business consultant since 2010. Master Flame pursued his childhood dream of becoming a professional wrestler at the age of 38 and actively wrestled for Millennium Pro Wrestling from 2013-2019 becoming a Triple Crown Champion, the first ever MPW Unified Champion and a member of the Millennium Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. Jason is an active member of his community and serves on the Board of Directors for several local organizations and community events. Recently, Jason and his wife Jackie have become partners in Country Harvest Restaurant and Coaches Old Fashioned Iced Cream Parlor. Jason is also the host of the Master Motivation podcast. As an active community member, he attributes the success of his businesses to understanding the importance of giving back to those in his community.
Jason was born and raised in the Conejo Valley, moved to Moorpark, CA in 1993 and currently resides with his wife, Jackie and two children, Madyson and Mason.
Moorpark Karate & Krav Maga has been offering martial arts & self defense instruction to students of all ages in Moorpark since beginning their martial arts program at Arroyo Vista Recreation Center in 1994. Since then, almost 400 students have been promoted to the rank of Black Belt. Their goal is to build a safer and stronger community through teaching the most effective self defense curriculum possible. Moorpark Karate and Krav Maga has been voted Moorpark’s #1 Family Martial Arts school for several years running. Through effective leadership training, a solid character education program and making community service a priority; they are truly making an impact!!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Most recently, when we were faced with the restrictions of Covid in CA, we had to shift to teaching classes online and then outside for almost 9 months. We had just leased our new facility and we were not able to even teach inside during that time. Many martial arts schools struggle and it is said that more than 1/3 martial arts school closed their business permanently during this time. Our time jumped in right away and focused on providing the best possible service to all of our members without sacrificing safety and following guidelines as closely as possible.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Our school tirelessly looks for ways to give back to our community and contribute to local organizations, specifically youth organizations. My wife and I are both actively involved in our Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and all of our school PTAs, as well as being Commissioners on the Parks & Recreation and Arts commissions. As active members of our community, we believe that our reputation has been built and continues to be reinforced by what we do, how we contribute and all the ways that we give back to our community.
