We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Fazio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jaso below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about making remote work effective.
Working remote is the name of my game! It’s nothing for me to be “gone” for a week at a time or more and oftentimes in the middle of nowhere. This wasn’t always easy, and oftentimes makes having clients along difficult at best.
Work remotely, huh? Sure, my team, meaning myself, is definitely able to work remotely. Chasing sunrises and sunsets will often take me far from civilization. It’s tough to find travel companions willing to spend a week or more out on the road. It’s even more tough to find clients willing to take that trip. Thankfully, I do landscape photography first for personal pleasure, fulfillment, and passion, and profit second. These, to me, are the right reasons. This is important.
On the plus side, most of my clients end up turning into good friends. Let’s face it, if you find someone willing to spend hours planning a week-long trip full of cold and dark early mornings, gorgeous sunrises, scampering to the next location early enough to set up to photograph sunset, shooting the evening’s stars, and getting back to camp with just enough time to catch a few zzz’s before repeating the process again the next day only to have to alter plans on the fly due to cloud cover/weather, that person is a rarity. Those bonds are strong. That’s a huge benefit!
As for pitfalls, I can’t think of many other than it is a bit of a niche career. Tho, back to my stance of making sure I’m doing it for the right reasons.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an engineer by training and a nature lover at heart. Approaching my Air Force retirement, I was forced to make a decision. Do I continue in this area as a Mr. living to make a few dollars or do I spend my remaining days living for what I love? I chose the latter.
I enjoy the sunrises/sets, the breeze blowing through the crackling aspens, and admiring Mother Nature in general. I felt enjoying all of my limited number of days alive on this Earth was more important than simply living for the weekends. With that, I chose to chase my dreams instead of chasing the dollar.
This passion began as a hiker, then a backpacker/survivalist, then it morphed into a landscape photographer. I picked up a camera and spent the next few years learning how to tell Mother Nature’s story in 2D space.
This has put me in a unique position as I tend to take a bit of a different approach to photography than others. The camera is primary as far as the dollar is concerned, but definitely takes a back seat to the experience itself. This leads me to my training that I offer.
Sure, I’ll take people out on a week-long photography adventure. This is definitely something that I love to do. However, it’s not realistic for everyone. Most of what I do is cater to visitors of Colorado in general and Colorado Springs more locally.
Oftentimes, individuals come on vacation and don’t necessarily know “photography” locations. They know general areas such as the Garden Of The Gods, Pikes Peak, or Rocky Mountain National Park. Tho, with this limited information, it’s difficult to get yourself into position, in the dark before sunrise, in order to catch that memorable photograph one is likely to be in search of. This is where I come in. I can take them directly to a location based off of local weather conditions. This is something that’s oftentimes difficult to plan when you don’t know the area/State very well.
In addition to being a “photography guide,” I also teach typical landscape photography things like composition, editing techniques, camera settings, etc. I do this for individuals, small groups, and in workshop settings.
When I’m not in the field, I can be found working behind my printers with my Limited Edition Prints, my Traditional Prints, or fine tuning the online courses that are soon to be available. I do enjoy providing images for people’s walls, especially if it’s a photograph of a place that they’ve been and have shared their story of the location with me. Tho, even more than that, I enjoy taking someone out and helping them take their own image that they can be proud of on their walls. I do all of this through my website over at www.JasonFazioPhotography.com

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I recently had a significant medical set-back. In addition to me coming very close to not leaving the operating table, this event nearly took my ability to get out and about. Soon after, I chose to test my abilities. I loaded up my Delica, strapped on a backpack, and took out on one of my adventures. I’m glad I was alone. I’d definitely not want anyone to have seen me in the physical/emotional state that I was in. I quickly found out how physically limited I’d become. Walking miles across the desert while simultaneously trying to catch that perfect lighting helped me learn my new limits, tho definitely the hard way. At the time, I questioned my sanity. Looking back, as is oftentimes the case, I’d not change a thing. In the end, I checked off two compositions that had eluded me to this point, found my new physical/mental limits, and only grew from there!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My overall goal is to enjoy each day that I have left. My/Your days are precious. In line with this goal, I hope to capture images that help me tell the day’s story, inspire others to live their day’s to the fullest, and drive me to improve on my craft. That’s why I tend to “keep it real.” You’ll see no AI in my photography. If I drove two days for a composition, and the skies were bland, you’ll get images with bland skies. What you’ll also get is me planning a reattack, as I will be back! I’ll be back because the image that I came home with and the image in my mind don’t match. I take that as a challenge!
