We recently connected with Jason Ellis and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Just networking and getting your name out there.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It started out as a hobby. Just photography, not video. I always knew I could potentially make money off of it someday, but it took a few years before I was able to save up and shell out the money for a camera. After a few years of trial and error, I figured out what I enjoy shooting, and what works best for me, and was therefor able to evolve my business into what it is today.
The thing I’m most proud of is that I’ve never been able to compromise. I never liked the idea of shooting weddings and portraits, and I always said if that’s the only I can make this lucrative, then I guess I’ll never make money off of this. Did my refusal to commence in this make it take longer for me to get the ball rolling? Absolutely, but I eventually made it work and it was well worth the wait.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The simple fact that I’m doing something I actually enjoy. Most people don’t find their calling in the workplace. Most people don’t even find something they’re passionate about. They just work, so for me to be an exception to the rule is very special.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Networking events.
