We were lucky to catch up with Jason Carey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
My whole career! Some of it I’ll take responsibility for as who I am, what I do, and my brand has evolved over the years. For years I have felt like managers and agents just didn’t know what to do with me. Honestly they still don’t because I’m a swiss army knife of talent and abilities. My personality and voice are my perceived assets that anyone can use. I say perceived because my vision, my brain, implementation of ideas is my real super power. Most people don’t know how to use that to their benefit and h0w does it fit into whatever partnership we could form. They actually don’t even see that when they see “J Boy”. Kind of a gift and a curse because I want you to think “Jason Carey the best MC you ever did See” or “Jason Carey, I need to do some film work with him.” Problem is that’s not the end of the conversation and it’s up to me to change that

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think the dope part about being an independent artist, or small business is that “It’s always new to someone” so as many people that may have heard of me or what I do it’s that many that never have. That keeps me humble too {Laughs}, but I started out as purely a hip hop recording and performing artist with acting training and experience. It’s important to say Recording and performing because it’s people that say they are artist that never recorded a song or performed original material in front of people. I got into everything I do now by letting my gifts make a way and always staying curious. There are few things in this world that I “can’t do” so I keep pushing. What was once “a try” has become a service I provide and now get paid for. One of the main things I do or am known for is I’m a multi-media personality so you put the mic in my hand and I make an undeniable lasting impact. But what I have realized is that doesn’t really tell the story.
I really am the solution to your brand or small business’s communications challenges. Every brand has the challenge of telling their story, connecting consumers to their brand/product/or event. Whether you have a single product or event or something mass produced. You have to connect people to it in various ways, that’s the problem I solve. Your communications problems may engaging guest at a single event, introducing a new product at a festival or online, Men pulling your Fresh together, providing the proper voice over for your ads, writing a jingle, finding your voice and utilizing it via social media, creating process that makes operating efficient or effective. I truly understand this stuff and love it!!! All of these are the reasons and more to talk to me.
Many people only know “J Boy on the mic my event is going to go up!” few know how much input I have in the planning, the aesthetics, overall results. So often conversations have ended because they didn’t think they needed a host, a radio personality, a podcaster or Just didn’t understand everything I do. Let me tell you something all this experience and high education its not wasted at all {Laughs playfully}. This is what truly sets myself and my team apart from the guy/girl just saying “Look at me” or “hire me because I’m so talented” it’s never about me honestly. All those things will shine through regardless; my talent, my charisma, my look…the shine will come so I’m not thinking about that. I’m in relentless pursuit of greatness for myself, my peers, and my clients. Unmatched energy and work ethic, no days off. If you have a brand or a small business you NEED to talk to me at some point. That’s not opinion, that’s fact I got receipts.
So what I’m most proud of is as ambitious and constructively dissatisfied as I am always, I know how far I have come. I’m proud that I’m still hungry and want to grow even more. I’m even more selective with my time and the people I spend the moments or energy on. I’m proud that I have been able to cut out this life I wanted and love so much for myself. I stayed down until my gifts could take care of me. I’m SUPER happy all the time, no frontin’! I don’t have bad days, may have challenges but bad days…NEVER! I’m super proud of that
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
This is a age old thing but I am and advocate and I carry this flag heavy. We are here together really to help each other but somewhere along the way the whole “That’s on YOU culture” was formed. There are many things that are on the individual but one of those things is to HELP your fellow man or woman. Especially those that are already working to help themselves. So what can we do to best support artist, creatives…SHARE the information!!! It’s so simple yet so many people fail at this. Bad news travels faster than good news or positive news because people like train wrecks. Wouldn’t it be nice if people liked to talk about a functioning train…that’s not going to happen though huh? Because the train is doing what its “suppose to do” right. As an artist/creative statistics say I’m not suppose to be good or successful! So we should all be talking about that extraordinary happening too. Imagine if everyone shared their friends products couple times a week, purchase something monthly or few times a year, watched their videos. COMMIT TO SUPPORTING YOUR CREATIVE FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER. heck they may not even be family but you like what they do…tell somebody.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
What non-creatives need to understand not so much about me but maybe your peer, family member or significant other. Creativity will find its way, you will not be able to forget it or stop it so its best to let it grow. Creatives may have trouble sleeping or paying attention to you because the mind is moving. Every second they have a new idea or see a different angle of a situation or task. What we may need assistance with is controlling it, not wanting to do everything all at once or align each idea for when we want to implement it. That’s the type teammates we need, someone that will help us organize all of those thoughts and turn them into plans. We want to create it all, can’t sit still but maybe you can help be the administrative arm of what it is the creative has in their head. Often times you are the missing puzzle piece to the success because an idea without great implementation skills can be wasted. That is how YOU can better understand and help. Don’t try to get in the way of the creativity, feed it with your skill set
