We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Cage a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Photo booths are a popular choice for events, but the barrier to entry for starting a photo booth company is low, which means that the market is flooded with operators using mass-produced, generic booths from cheap manufacturers. Many of these companies are run as hobbies by individuals with limited business or even basic photography know-how. They often offer a subpar experience that relies on customers like you, not knowing any better. Simply put, we felt most were ugly, low quality, and frankly ripping you off.
We wanted to change that by building photo booths that captured the essence of what makes having a great photo of you taken in the first place so much fun. We brought it back to the roots of photography with a vintage vibe that feels real and premium, but we still managed to pack it with all the latest in photography and social sharing technology. We have real photographers who operate actual shutter buttons instead of standard 3,2,1 countdowns run by software on an old PC. This lets us grab the perfect moments and all those fun, unexpected ones in between. Our booths are just as fun to look at and watch as they are to use.
In addition to creating a unique, high-quality product, we prioritize the customer experience. We believe that a great photo booth experience should be a wow moment in itself and be delivered by a team of artists who are passionate about what they do. Our commitment to originality and value sets us apart from other photo booth companies.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been an entrepreneur focusing on creating experiences that make people happy and bring smiles to their faces. As a radio host for years, I loved hosting events and eventually partnered with large production companies to start my own event business, providing entertainment for private and corporate events. As I watched the trend of photo booths growing in popularity, I saw an opportunity to improve upon the existing offerings and create something extraordinary. That’s how Fotably was born.
At Fotably, we provide beautiful, vintage-inspired photo booth experiences that are of high value and create photos and memories that you’ll genuinely want to keep. Our experiences are designed to be wow elements in themselves.
We are incredibly proud to have been recognized and voted by the Association of Wedding Planners as a diamond vendor. This distinction is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication to providing our clients with the highest service and quality. We strive to be the go-to choice for premium wedding organizers and venues, and it’s gratifying to see that such a prestigious organization recognized our efforts.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth for sure. Someone wise once told me if you focus on building a great product, it will market itself. We’ve found the best way to generate new business is by having our booth out and about and seen as much as possible. We did a lot of work on our website to also help get across the same quality and wow feeling you get when using our booths in person.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
If you try to please everyone, you will please no one. It’s easy to want to say yes to everything and try to make things work for clients for whom you might not actually be the right person or business. I quickly learned to focus on what we are great at and be the best. The riches are in the niches, as they say, and being the master of your lane is better than swerving all over the road.
