We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Bynum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have been blessed to be a part of some really meaningful and amazing projects. When I was 18 going on 19 I was invited to play with a band and see if I would be a good fit to join. It was a rock band and from the first rehearsal I knew it would be an incredible band to work with and it was a once and a lifetime opportunity. I joined the band and within the first year we were in Los Angeles playing a showcase at the Viper Room for every major label in the industry. That band was Paramore and the rest is history they have now gone multi platinum and toured all over the world. It was one of the most incredible experience of my life and I a forever grateful.
On that note this year I sat down to jam with my brother Benjamin and his friend Davie. From the first note it was magic. We started playing once a week and we managed to write about 30 songs. We had no idea we would be starting a band. Our band is called Mister Morning. It’s the most incredible and important project I’ve ever worked on. We will be releasing a record next year so be on the look out for Mister Morning!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jason Bynum I am a musician and actor from Franklin Tennessee. I’ve been a musician most of my life and an actor about half of it. I was the founding member of Paramore and have played for countless other bands and artists during my career. I’ve worked on multiple television shows and movies. I have had some amazing opportunities and I am so thankful for them. I have an amazing wife and 2 incredible kids. My latest project is a rock band called Mister Morning. I would compare us to Jimmy eat world meets the beetles. We will have a record coming out in 2024 and we are super excited about it. I also just worked on a film project pilot called the Wayward Family where I get to not only act but play guitar and sing. I cannot wait to make this movie!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Wow there were some lessons I had to learn the hard way. I didn’t expect to be a part of a multi platinum band at 19. So having some business knowledge would have been amazing. I wasn’t aware of the intricacies of the music industry at that age and honestly I am still foggy on most of it. If anyone wants to help me please reach out! Haha There are so many things I wished I knew back then and so much I wish I knew now. How to gather the money you are owed would have been so helpful. I feel like there are still thousands of dollars I don’t know how to access.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
What society can do for artists and creatives. Is buy their goods. Listen to their music. Go to their shows. They rely on the public to stay alive. At the same time creating art that people dig. Once we realize we are all in this together we can make incredible art and afford a beer after the show. Let’s support one another and have a good time!
