We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason & Brigitte Shamy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason & Brigitte, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Hi,
My name is Brigitte. I am a modest clothing desinger. My mission has changed over the years, but has evolved into my favorite thing ever… Make Women’s Lives Better.
I have always loved to wear clothing that made me feel cute and comfortable, but my way of dressing wasn’t traditionally modest. Fast forward to my early twenties I joined The Church and found myself on a mission now to still dress cute and comfy without compromising being modest. WELL, after the most discouraging few hours at the mall and then a few other stores… I said to myself this is a JOKE! I could find CUTE clothes that were comfy but NOT modest… I could find modest clothes… that were, well, uh, how do I say this without needing to repent for my words… NOT CUTE.
I started making clothes for myself and would be out and about or at church and people would so kindly tell me I looked cute or they wished that I could dress them. I thought to myself, why can’t I dress you? I love it, I hoped they would love it so…
I went to work. I have always loved fashion design and studied it in college for a few years. With help from google, lots of diet cokes and more than a few late nights, my little boutique clothing line was born. I opened my house up to ladies 1 day a week, FRIDAY, from 10am – 6pm and I would help them dress cute comfy and modest for their body types. Well… they all told a few of their friends and 6 months down the road, one Friday, I had over 100 women show up to my house… I thought my neighbors were gonna freak, I thought for sure the police were going to show up. LOL.
We had two weeks to figure out what to do as I was also expecting twins very shortly (It’s fine, everything’s fine) We found a location, stocked it, decorated it and the night before we kicked the doors open we sent the email… The please-don’t-make-us-move-into-your-basement-grand-opening-email… The community showed up in droves to support us… That store was open for 3 years and never did we have more sales than on day one…
SexyModest.com has been around for 15 years now and has grown from our basement to being the number one preforming clothing Costco road show of all time. It is still as thrilling for us to this day to find and serve women who value modesty, but aren’t done being CUTE and COMFY.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We make women’s lives better through designing cute comfy and modest clothing.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The time had come where we had to choose between our brick and mortar locations and keeping our family together… the decision had serious negative financial consequences, but we chose the family and had to close our doors to our clientele that we LOVED dearly. However we were able to keep our online doors open and continue to serve them to this day.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We met in May, he was speaking at a seminar I attended. I came by to get more info from one of his co-workers and my hubby-to-be was actually not so sweet. I asked him what his problem was, he said he was hungry, I said… Can I buy you a pizza, I did. We stayed up all night talking… at the end of that fateful night we had our last first kiss. He lived in Utah and I in Iowa. We spoke daily over the phone. I moved to utah in October, was engaged in November and married in December. We now have 4 daughters and the rest as they say, is history.
