We recently connected with Jason Brammer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far has been designing and painting artwork on several drum kits for Jimmy Chamberlin of “The Smashing Pumpkins”. When I first heard their album Gish at 17, it was a transformative experience. Their sound was like nothing I had ever encountered before. Fast forward to 2011, I had the chance to meet Jimmy at an art event where I was doing live painting. Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch, and I’ve had the honor of painting four drum kits for him, along with a custom cymbal cabinet and custom airbrushed stage vest. The creative process of interpreting his vision and translating it into dynamic visuals has been incredibly meaningful. It felt full circle—combining my passion for art with a deep personal connection to music that has been so influential in my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got my start in the painting industry working alongside my mother, hand-painting kids’ rooms for interior designers and private clients. It was during this time that I fell in love with transforming spaces through art. In high school, I was fortunate to have an amazing art teacher, Glenn Litts, who introduced me to airbrushing. I’ve been hooked ever since. Glenn’s mentorship continues to this day, as he still teaches me new technical aspects of mural painting, which has greatly shaped my craft.
Now, I specialize in a range of airbrushing and traditional brush painting techniques, creating both interior and exterior murals of various scales. In addition to murals, I also create original fine art including paintings, drawings, and mixed media works as well as custom painted clothing, which is a newer venture I’m really excited about.
What I’m most proud of is seeing my murals displayed in public spaces, where they can be enjoyed by so many people on a daily basis. I believe that art should be accessible to everyone, and public murals have the power to transform an entire area, bringing a sense of identity and pride to communities. That’s what drives me—using art to create meaningful, lasting connections between people and their environment.”
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is essential to running my business, and a perfect example is my current exterior mural project. Back in 2018, I was commissioned by the Shedd Aquarium to create an outdoor mural promoting their ‘Underwater Beauty’ show. It’s located at a prominent intersection in my neighborhood of Logan Square, Chicago, and has become a piece of art that I’m really proud of.
Recently, the mural was vandalized—someone threw blue paint across its surface. When I found out, I didn’t waste any time. I gathered my materials and immediately started the repair process. What could have been a frustrating setback actually turned into a great opportunity. Not only did I restore the mural, but I also had the chance to expand it. I added new elements, including a nine-foot shark and a giant octopus. What started as a problem ended up allowing me to take the mural to the next level, making it bigger and better than before. It was an unexpected but fulfilling challenge that reinforced how adaptability and persistence are key to thriving in this field.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is the real-time, enthusiastic feedback I receive while painting outside in public spaces. There’s something truly special about the way people respond—whether it’s a honk, a thumbs-up, or a shout of approval from someone passing by on foot or in a car. It’s a rare experience to get that kind of immediate, positive affirmation in any profession, and it fuels my passion even more. Knowing that my work is bringing joy to people in the moment is incredibly fulfilling.
