We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Adolf a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Writing has always come naturally to me. When I was young, I would write short stories as fast as possible – I had to get the words in my head down on paper. I would take in my English classes with enthusiasm and try to apply what I learned to whatever I was writing at that moment. Over time, life got in the way and I got away from my craft for a bit. About a decade ago or so, I started writing again. As a way to hone my craft, I started a music based blog called Jason’s Jukebox. I figured regularly writing about albums that I liked would help my fiction based writing. Regular writing – even if it all gets cut – is an essential habit that reaps rewards.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I run a music based blog called Jason’s Jukebox. I was based out of Seattle, WA but recently moved home to the Philadelphia, PA region. My reviews are focused on albums that I feel are worthwhile to seek out and listen to – I do not write negative reviews on my website. My philosophy is that it is important to build up artists and feed positive energy into the world. My readers are from all over the world but my blog resonates the most with readers in England. I bring a unique perspective to my reviews – I focus on the aspects of the music that I think stand out and try to give the reader a sense of what the album sounds like. I’ve often been frustrated after reading a music review and had no idea what the music would sound like – I try to avoid leaving readers with that feeling. Not so long ago I had the opportunity to appear in a Mudhoney video, which was quite an experience!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way that society can support artists is by buying their work. Streaming is great – I do it too – but it does not provide livable wages for artists. Buying records, t-shirts, or downloading albums is the best way to contribute to a thriving creative ecosystem. Go to concerts – let an artist know that they touched your soul. It means a lot to them!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There are a few things driving my creative journey. I want to share incredible music with the world and support the arts. I want to hone my craft so that the music writing feeds into my fiction writing. I am currently writing a book, Dust & Feather, that is a Jack Kerouac style novel that is based on a friend who committed suicide. My artistic endeavors feed into each other.
