Hi Jason Adam, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
All my life I’ve seen films from around the world that have shaped me and moulded me into the person I am today. I always wondered why my home, South Africa, was never a part of that pantheon of countries that have shaped world cinema – we certainly have the people and the stories for it. I hope my life’s work can share with the world just how wonderful, complicated and uncompromisingly human my country and its people are.
Jason Adam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jason Adam Maselle – I am a BAFTA nominated filmmaker from Johannesburg, South Africa currently based in New York City.
My work is driven by my passion to share morally complex and character rich South African stories, while also pursuing universal themes such as unrequited love, grief and the special feeling you get in your chest when something takes your breath away.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I think J.M Coetzee’s ‘Disgrace’ changed my life. I had never seen South Africa depicted like that before in storytelling. It felt honest and painful and vulnerable – I still tear up when I read the book’s final lines.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Sitting in a cinema, watching one of my films and hearing the audience laugh or gasp or groan or cry- just knowing that for that split second you gave them an emotional reaction that was so real and true that it just had to be expressed. It’s a high that I will be chasing for the rest of my life.
