We recently connected with Jasmyn T. Curry and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmyn T., thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I often look back and think about my beginning journey to becoming an actress. Yes I sometimes wonder how far along I would have been in the acting industry if I had pursued and took it seriously back in grade school. And sometimes I compare myself to my peers around my age and their successes but, I do have to quickly remind myself of the reason why I chose to wait until after high school to pursue acting. This reason was because I did not want to be a child star or be homeschooled and I’m proud that I made that decision because I wanted to live a normal school life and we all know that you cannot get your childhood back so I do know I made the best decision for me and what is for me is for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey my name is Jasmyn T. Curry and I’m Actress from Atlanta, Georgia. I have had the passion for acting since I was in elementary school and I’ve been professionally acting since 2018. I absolutely love being a creative and I love sharing my craft with the world and being able to make people happy through the screens & stage. When starting this journey I was so blessed to be able to have such a supportive mother in the process when most don’t have such a strong support system when getting into any creative industry space, which is granted. But I do remember the day I went in my mom’s room saying I wanted to be an actress and she said to me okay Jas I believe in you so let’s make it happen.
So ever since I have created a space for myself to be able to fully enjoy acting. I did decide to wait until I entered college to pursue my dream because I felt that was a better choice for my life at that point. So in college I studied theater at HBCU Grambling State University which had a great award winning Performing Arts Department. Then soon after I realized I’d be better suited for television and film so I left college to pursue those mediums professionally. After that period I was taking acting classes and networking as much as I could, and really learned everything I could about the acting industry like the business, agents, managers, self tapes, taxes for actors, commercials, actors unions, casting directors and so much more. Which navigated me to be able to meet so many great people who have helped me along the way.
And with that knowledge a year later I booked my first film on BET in 2018 called “T’was The Chaos before Christmas” Directed by Terri J. Vaughn which became a hit success for the network when it premiered in December 2019. And also my most recent project, which released this past October 2022, called “Hunther” now available on Amazon Prime Video & Tubi.
With the well successes I have had, it does comes along with a lot of hard work. I pride myself on taking my career seriously within the craft. I stay dedicated in acting classes as well as having hobbies outside of acting whether they be learning how to play the piano, currently knitting, and also with this summer coming up learning how to swim. I have many ways to go in this industry and I am confident that I will succeed with my dedication.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non-creatives wouldn’t typically understand what it takes to 100% put yourself out there as an actor. We have to really dig deep within ourselves and fully be vulnerable in order to portray the character till its fullest and with that comes with going into the places of trauma or true happiness. We have to be vulnerable at all times and that isn’t always easy as you would think. But at the end of the day, it is a form of therapy for us as Actors. So, having a job that forces you to see yourself from all angles is the best thing that I could ask for.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the reward will always be the idea that we as artists can create a project for people to have an outlet from their every day life to be able to really decompress and fully immerse themselves in this art, and they don’t have to think about every day stresses and truly be happy while they’re tuned in.
