We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jasmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first client was someone I met through a networking community. At first, I thought I did everything wrong to get a client. I met up with them in-person for coffee, going way out of my way for a first meeting. I also thought I gave them too much information because I wrote out a whole strategy for them on a napkin. However, I guess giving them too much worked in my favour because they emailed me after to work with me!
Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Jasmine, a writer, content marketing consultant, and coach.
Through Jasmine Williams Media, I develop authentic, personality-packed copy and content for brands you love — and help freelance creatives build businesses they love. I offer content marketing consulting services to HR, tech, and creative industries. I also do some public speaking as well. Some career highlights include writing the sales page and email funnel for a $40k+ course launch, developing website copy for the original thinkers behind the Jobs To Be Done Theory, and writing the landing page copy and tagline for a virtual conference with over 28k+ attendees (beating their goal of 27,000 attendees).
I also offer coaching, courses, and digital products to aspiring to early-stage freelance creatives. For example, I’m the creator behind Freelance Curious, a weekly newsletter for freelance creatives, and Click-worthy Creative Academy, an online freelance mentorship program.
I studied journalism at university and went on to work in both media and marketing. But after a few years on the 9-to-5 grind, I felt the itch to do my own thing. I also come from an entrepreneurial family (my parents and two grandparents were entrepreneurs), so I always felt like I would start my own business at some point. After a bit of soul searching, I realized I could make a business using my content marketing skills and start a consulting business. I started my business five years ago, and Jasmine Williams Media is still going strong!
I think what sets me apart are my abilities to adapt to different brand voices and to make complex topics simple and digestible. I’m good at getting into people’s heads and creating copy and content that sounds like them — but elevated. Also, whether I’m writing copy or running a workshop, I often get feedback that I make everything easy to understand and actionable. I get so excited when I see people take a concept I’ve shown them and apply it right away.
I’m proud to have been running my business for five years! The last few years have been *a lot* and not many companies make it to the 5-year mark, so I’m proud of myself for building a company that has lasted as long as it has.
Lastly, I’d say if you’re looking for someone who can produce great content as well as offer direction, guidance, and higher-level marketing support, you should give me a shout! And if you’re a freelance creative looking for support as you launch and grow your business, you should check out my resources.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’ve had to unlearn is the idea that you have to be super-available to be a good freelance consultant. When I started my business, I had no boundaries and would answer calls after work hours. I even took a discovery call over WhatsApp once, which I cringe about now. I think this came from having an employee mindset, but once I remembered that I was the boss now (and also worked with a business coach), I got a lot better at setting boundaries with clients and being firm with them,
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I always say, “Good work gets you good work.” I give my all to every client, and even if things don’t go as planned, I go above and beyond to address the issue and ensure everybody I work with feels satisfied and well taken care of.
