We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Sykes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that in order to be successful you have to fail at something. I say this because, in my own life, I’ve experienced some failure that has shaped my mental space in order to handle the entrepreneurial lifestyle. I feel that once you’ve tasted failure, it fuels you to not ever be in that same space again Whether it’s physically, mentally, financially, or other. You’ll never want to go back there so you do what you can, use the tools you have and what you’ve learned along the way to position yourself and your business in a better place. Along with having experienced failure, of course you need to be driven, be passionate, be persistent, and committed. Otherwise, you will walk away from it all or do the bare minimum, which won’t help your business grow.

Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Jasmine Sykes, an Atlanta-based luxury photographer. For almost 12 years, I’ve been a wife to my amazing husband. I’m also a homeschooling mother to 6 wonderful children. Yes six!
My husband and I started our photography/videography business in 2017 as Ivy & Elm Photography. Which was one of our many businesses that we own. We merged two of our businesses this year (2023) to create one photo/video company, which is now 1322 Visuals. I specialize in portraiture: maternity, newborns, and babies. However, I’m always up to the task of providing beautiful portraits for any creative work, birthday, family, events or other. My Husband, Mic, is cultured in all things video production. From writing, to lighting, audio, directing, and editing. Whatever your vision is, he’s the man to fulfill it.
1322 Visuals, today, provides quality services and products to build legacies, and provide beautiful archival portraits and videos for families and business owners alike.
My husband is actually the one that jump started this whole venture. I used to take pictures for our church to display on the church website. He saw that I really enjoyed taking the pictures, so he sold equipment from another business we started to purchase my first camera. He said to me, “Let it make us some money”. (Laughing) It took me two years to even start! Once I combined the passion that I had for the craft, with courage, knowledge and commitment, the rest was history.
This business has taken us both out of traditional jobs, and pushed us into a life of entrepreneurship.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a portrait photographer is the impact my work has on the legacy of families. I create pieces that families will cherish for a LIFETIME. I immortalize the time… a time when… a moment. It only appreciates as the years go on. To think that my work will inspire someone’s joy and happiness 50 years from now and beyond… that’s worth it.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Honestly, the greatest form of marketing that has transcended time, is word of mouth. I have the most phenomenal clients and followers. 95% of the time my new clients were referred by my old clients or someone that follows my business on social media. I love that! I try to deliver an experience for my client’s to make them feel comfortable, seen and heard, and to present them in the best way possible. I love to hear that someone referred another to my business.
