We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Sutherlin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Jasmine , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
One unexpected problem I’ve faced and currently face is living with a rare disease that causes physical limitations. I have a rare disease called Desmoid Sarcoma. I’ve had tumors in my left extremity (arm pit area and chest wall) since 2016. I’ve been through countless chemotherapy treatments, radiation, and surgeries. The tumors causes chronic pain and limited range of motion. I have pins and needle like feelings in my left arm and hand which casues numbness which is not good thing while sewing. Now you know as a designer, we need our arms and hands. There are days when I’m sewing, and I just want to give up but I can’t stop though. Being a creative has literally saved my life. It takes me to another world where I can forget my problems. That’s until the pain kicks in. I’ve learned over the years, that I must give myself some grace and sew at my pace. That’s hard to say while trying to run your business that you one day what to live off. I’m not in remission yet but I know God will heal me and I will be able to share my story and fashion with people across the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jasmine Sutherlin. I was born in raised in Hampton, VA. I received my Masters in Special Education from Norfolk State University. Sewing has been in the family for generations. I didn’t start taking it serious until the COVID 19 pandemic. Living with a rare disease and being stuck in the house only increased my depression. I fought through depression by simply being creative. Remembering the skills my grandmother and mother taught me, I upcycled my first denim jacket and the rest was history. I started my business (UN)Match’d Custom Apparel in 2021. I named my brand (UN)Match’d and spelled it uniquely because the journey I’ve been on while battling a rare disease and the times I could have lost my life but I’m still here! My business focuses on 1 of 1 upcycled clothing and handmade designs. I love making unique pieces and giving my customers the 1 of 1 experience. Everyone deserves a 1 of a kind experience which is why I offer payment options in my check out section. I also make affordable upcycled items as well. My brand just about fashion, it’s to inspire and empower.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to to inspire others to pursue their dreams while overcoming obstacles. Let my story be a testimony of what happens when you pursue your passion over depression.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to see the looks on my customers faces as I unveil their custom piece. I think I shock myself the most because I really created something beautiful despite pain I feel while making it.
