Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I definitely wish I got serious about my content creating sooner. I believe in building an authentic and genuine following, so starting sooner would have been ideal in creating a better community among those that follow me and engage. I spent soo much time focusing on whether or not I was good enough to make posts or videos, or the quality of my camera when I had this creative process all along. I’ve been graciously welcomed and I’ve started seeing so much support flood in from strangers and of course family and friends.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been a self starter, stemming from my childhood. My inspiration has always been my granny. She is someone who puts her mind to something and never lets an obstacle get in her way. She has always taught me to be confident and has always instilled in me the principles of learning. I’ve grown up with a single mother and grandparents who have been the pillars of our family. From them I’ve learned to be a leader and a fighter. I’ve always wanted to help people and to put a smile on others faces, so growing up I’ve always had a “dramatic” character so to say. I’ve been told that I’m somewhat of a renaissance woman, so many trades and hobbies I could never choose just one thing to focus on. But of all the things I’ve tried food has been my biggest passion. As a little girl I’d be glued to the Food Network channel fascinated by Paula Deen, Barefoot Contessa and many other cooks. I’d be alongside my granny in the kitchen as she showed me how to chop, julienne, sauté, and cook delicious foods. My granny never had to measure, but rather use her eyes and taste to tell what a dish needed. So as long as I could remember food was a big part of my life, Every time I’ was alone in the kitchen it was my very own cooking show reading out loud the next steps and talking to an empty room as if I had a live audience watching me, making imaginary YouTube videos and enjoying every minute of it! As I grew older though my relationship with food became negative, my feelings towards food weren’t the same. At this time I’d realized I had created an unhealthy relationship with food. This is when I realized I needed to become more aware of the food I was putting into my body. So I started documenting my journey on my path to creating a positive relationship with the thing I enjoyed most. Making videos and content helped me along my journey to learning how to nourish my body with the foods I enjoyed. I wanted people to see someone who wasn’t restricting foods heavily or making healthy food bland. I documented my weightloss alongside my discovery of new foods. After a while I could finally see the difference in my body not only in my appearance but in the way I felt. I’ve become a brand ambassador and I’ve also been able to stay true to myself. As a plus size creator things can be difficult to handle when it comes to negative feedback but for the most part I’ve found a safe space for me to enjoy being myself and sharing my videos with others even as a very small content creator I’ve felt joy and happiness from comments and messages I’ve received along the way. Being a creator is very rewarding but I’m definitely still working on growing and engaging audience. One day I hope to be able to create full time, but until then I still have a regular job full time as a PCA/home health aide. I do ubereats and so many side hustles as well. Hopefully one day all this hard work pays off and I can create more videos and invest more time into what I love most. Im most proud of how I show my authentic self in my videos and posts.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
One of the ways that society can help and support creatives is by engaging. We love to see feedback and questions on our posts. No one is perfect and even tips are greatly appreciated. A like share follow all means soo much especially as we are at the start of of creative journey. At times of low engagement we can really start to doubt ourselves and it’s great to see we have support and rapport among our community.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
At the very beginning of my journey I wish I would’ve known about groups and forums more, I’ve been added to discords and groups that have helped tremendously with growth and strategy for social media, I’ve also been really satisfied with Meta creator tips and trainings that have been added to the interface of some social media apps. SEO’s keywords trending audios and hashtags have helped tremendously in expediting growth across platforms.
