Alright, Jasmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I AM are the start of positive affirmations and are very powerful words. I AM TurnStyle was supposed to be a plus size fashion magazine, however, things went in a different direction for me. The following poem describes myself and how I came up with the name of my business:
“People mistake my confidence and flip it to conceit, Hold your head up high because life is great just depends on how you treat it.
Just take a look at me and try and see a woman with ambitions. My real beauty lies on the inside so I have no competition.
Only God knows my real strength, knows who I AM and who i’ll be. But also know that I have goals so don’t doubt me, just believe me.
No my STYLE is not the average STYLE, but i’m not your average woman. From my extra curves, my thicker hips, and the bouncing of my curls. I AM unique, my heart is gold.
See the 3 B’s they complete me because i’m Beautiful, Black, and Bold.
But every woman’s not the same as me, so find out who you are, just live life, be blessed, connect with God, and he will take you far.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jasmine Silas, I am a CEO and Business Coach. I AM TurnStyle is your creative empowerment shop, which allows your style and creativity to come to life. We specialize in handmade candles and personalized solutions, We also offer an array of classes and private events to fit your creative needs. I AM TurnStyle also has a sister, I AM TurnStyle Academy, which we help people start and scale their business.
A lot of people have great ideas, but they don’t know how to execute, so our main focus at The Academy is to assist people with bringing their ideas to life. We also help people build business credit without using their personal information, along with being organized and obtaining business marketing material.
At the shop, we strive for self care and intimate gifts. Candles are relaxing and makes your space(s) unique. They are calming and for me makes your space feels cozy and comfortable. Depending on the aroma, they can lighten your day. People also love to gift others, but are tired of the same ole boring gifts, such as gift cards, or last minute gifts. Our focus and job is to see what they have in mind and put it into physical form. For example, they may have a idea to create a graduation stole for someone, but don’t know how to design it, our job is to design it and take the workload off of them. They may be going on a trip/vacation and would like to have passport covers and/or matching luggage covers and our job is to create that and present them with new items.
I am most proud of my businesses because we keep growing. We are evolving and I love that! We are always coming up with something new and grabbing the eye of our clients and potential clients. I love that we are able to help people with their business and help them with their dreams.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business initially. I bought what I needed to get started, which was less than $200 and once I started and sold some products, OPM (other people’s money) was the rest. I used the money that I had received from my sold products and used that to purchased more products/materials.
I didn’t start off big or how I intend to end. I started with what I had and grew.
I have changed my candle vessels about 3-4 times and I don’t think i’m done lol – you just have to start and change as you go. If I would have waited until I had the right amount of funds, I would not be in business today.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth!
When my products or knowledge have helped someone, they tell this person and that person. Word of mouth has made I AM TurnStyle what it is today!
People reviews, regardless of what i’m selling or helping with, I always ask for reviews. Once I get reviews, I see what I need to work on (if anything) and let my customers/students speak for my business.
