We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Sepulveda recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jasmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I remember my first client like it was yesterday. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way, but my first client will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ll take you guys back with me to reminisce- ready?
I actually posted on my personal Facebook that I was taking a leap a faith and wanted to expand my hobby, you know- try to turn it into a business. I remember posting something a long the lines of, I was open to photographing anyone who was interested for whatever the occasion was.
I had multiple people reach out to me via Facebook but no one really went through with it- at least not at that moment. A few weeks had passed and I remember telling my husband, this is not going to work, no one is interested, maybe I should keep photographing my loved ones only and he reassured me that the time would come when I would least expect it. I’m sure many have felt what I felt at that time, a part of me was upset but the other part of me was definitely eager. He wasn’t wrong y’all, I was at the water park with my son when I received my first inquiry under my photosbyjasz email, the subject line was “graduation photoshoot” the email in general was so sweet and nice and she was trusting me to capture such a special milestone.
I responded back and she was in, I was so happy!! I called everyone I could to express the joy I felt, it may not have been a big deal to many but it was everything to me. It reassured me that it was the beginning of something amazing.
I charged her $70, but I had not been paid yet, I remember telling her to pay me the day of the shoot. The day came you guys, I’ve always been such an outgoing person, you know not shy, very talkative but that day every emotion in me was through the roof, I was extremely nervous, my first paying client and it wasn’t a friend or family. Overall, the photoshoot went great and I was paid, at the time it was the best $70 I’ve ever made, it felt so amazing… oh man, I can feel it all over again right now. What a beautiful memory that was locked in that day. I won’t ever forget it and years later this client has stuck around and has seen the progress I’ve made. It truly is something special.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Jasmine but many call me Jasz. I am a photographer and now with my business I am known as Photosbyjasz. I am based in Dallas Tx, and I specialize in a couple of areas like Maternity, Newborn, Smash Cake and Family Portraits. Although my area of specialty is changing little by little, I do eventually just want to focus on newborns all the way up to toddlers, I have my own cozy studio that’s located on Midway and 635. Most of the magic happens there.
Since most of my sessions are with children I make sure my parents don’t stress, I handle everything and make it such an ease. because when working with babes, we never really know what to expect. We definitely work on their time, therefore I love for my clients to show up, stress free and have a good time.
I am very proud of how much I’ve achieved since starting my photography business. I am passionate about making sure my clients have the best experience with me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly, it was quiet crazy; my audience on social media are mostly on Instagram. One day, the numbers just kept growing. Consistency is key, stay true to yourself, don’t compare your work to anyone- I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the industry is filled with so many photographers but we all portray our own unique style. Post your work, all of it; post your behind the scenes, I’ve been told that many of our audience loves to see that. If you can host giveaways, do that, but most importantly don’t give up.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Definitely being sincere, kind and reliable. Let’s be honest, you hear so many stories now a days of people just not being reliable or genuine. My character and personality, say a lot about me and when my clients meet me they not only see that but they see the skills I have and they value my work.
